If it does come out to be $327, I might just get it to replace my ASUS 1000HE netbook. At 19 hours of video playback, that's pretty impressive battery life. Though as a document reader, I wonder if it'll even squeeze out 40 hours.

"Okay, we have to develop a better mp3 player than the ipod."
"Okay, we have to develop a better GUI than OSX."
"Okay, we have to develop a better phone than the iphone."
"Okay, we have to develop a better ad campaign than apple's."

While 'better' is arguable with bullet points, perception somehow is usually in apple's favor.

While the past can not determine the future, it would be foolish to ignore it. A direct attack against Apple may not work and I would imagine an Amazon board meeting where this idea is brought up and met with stunned silence.

Remember, Amazon OK'ed the design of the original Kindle 1.

The first three have been done. That last one is the hard part.

The vendors and content providers would view 'the best' as the one with the most market share and thus would have the most influence and control over their business decisions.

I think I read somewhere that there would be
a 300 Euro something price would be for a model with a standard LCD screen
while a 800 Euro model with pixelQI screen.

But as someone rightly posted. If they postponed until August, then we will have probably a wider choice ! So probably cheaper options as well !

Why would I pay more than 1000 USD for a pixelQI, when I could get an Edge for half that price (although with two separate screens) ?

In addition, I am waiting on amazon's reaction as well!

We still don't know what the prices are going to be. Everything posted about them is just speculation and vague ranges.

I got the impression that the new screen wouldn't add anything noticable to the cost of production. It was mentioned a few times that whilst there's going to be newer tech that provides colour eInk displays, it'll require a change in manufacturing where as the pixel Qi is supposed to be manufactured on very similar production gear. So whilst it may not be able to compete directly when the newer display tech comes around, it's going to be on sale sooner and should be cheaper.

The PopSci post covers some of this.

Next year or two looks to be bringing some interesting changes in display tech

If this is true (i.e. that Amazon doesn't need hardware to compete, not that they agree!), why are Amazon locking their content to the Kindle?

If they had an auto-convert to ePub, with application of, say, Adobe DRM on top to replace their DRM, they could sell to a market that was perhaps half as large again as their current Kindle user base.

Technically, this is easy, so I can't understand why they're not doing it if their profits are in the content, not the hardware.

Ohrly? No, they'd prefer a fragmented market allowing plenty of separate vendor lockins and no single device maker able to dictate to them.

JoeD - EPD screens can be made on standard TFT lines with Philip's EPLaR process.

No, I'm pretty sure it runs Android.

What do you suggest they do since the market is not divided in the way they prefer? They can't simply ignore the biggest player.

Eh, I think I'm getting off topic at this point. Sorry.

They do have the Kindle App for PCs, iPhone/iPod touch and Blackberry. So they see the value of selling their books on multiple machines.

But at the same time, they do make money selling Kindles so they don't want people reading their books on say a Sony reader.

So it will stay locked unless they decide to abandon hardware, which they probably won't. Even if they can compete without hardware, no point in giving it up if it's making some profit for them.
