Front 242 is great music for gym workouts.

Chris and I are highly compatible except for music. We have some groups that meet in the middle, like Trans Siberian Orchestra, but I like musicals and he likes...well, "...sounds like Godzilla ripping the tin roof off a warehouse and eating it". Between us, though, we could probably supply music for about six differently formatted radio stations.

I got to work, and the front door wouldn't open. Why didn't I take the hint and go home??

But this review of DEAD(ish) gave me a few giggles:

Even at 26 pages this "book" is not worth reading. It is something I could have written in an hour in 7th grade or so. Reading the overview was more fun than actually reading the book.

I thought that was Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music".

Industrial = techno + heavy metal.

It has its fans but it's definitely a love-hate genre. If you like Skinny Puppy you should also check out Front Line Assembly if you haven't already. For that matter. Einstürzende Neubauten, Ministry, Chemlab, and lighter stuff like KMFDM and of course Nine Inch Nails.

Grunge = heavy metal from Seattle. Or Neil Young.

Speaking of which, Soundgarden's inevitable reunion will be at the Lollapalooza show in Chicago this summer.

Not necessarily; you've liked some Crystal Method, Scorpions, Joe Satriani/Steve Vai/Eric Johnson and you said yourself that Megadeth wasn't bad except for Mustaine's voice (which a lot of people could do without, whether he's singing or just speaking, if you get my drift). Conversely we went to see (and meet) Whiskey Falls and I had no complaints, even singing along to the cover songs I knew. We also met in the middle on the Celtic stuff.

My SO and I have some overlap in music, but it's probably like Chris's and yours.

She has a skewed sense of hearing - she hears dog whistles, but doesn't hear low bass tones - so a fair bit of what I like either eludes her completely or is actively offensive. Well, that's what headphones are for. I spare her stuff like White Noise or Magma, and we both love Richard Thompson, so it works out.

True enough - we both enjoyed the Whiskey Falls show. And I do like Satriani/Vai/Johnson. Celtic I can actually go either way on, and I think the same is true for you, there. Depends on the artist.

Well, c'mon, to be fair, that might be setting the bar a little low.

I kid, I kid, people. Anyway, ABBA Arrival was my (and my sister's) first album that I wanted and got (my actual first album was Sally Boyden from the Young Talent Team, but my conditionals help me studiously ignore that fact).

You might not agree, but I always quite liked The Spice Girls, but for reasons of all-over production. They were one of the slickest "products" ever sold to a hands-out consumer-base. Also, I think Sporty Spice is pretty cool.

Cheers,
Marc

As a proud owner of roughly 3200 music CDs I am proud to say that I have a few ABBA.

I am a big fan of music and I like to give credit where credit is due. ABBA had their own sound and helped shape their genre of music. They are also one of the most successful bands ever to exist.

I don't care much for the mama mia musical stuff at this point in time because my wife overplayed the darn cd in the car (we have to drive 45 minutes to get anywhere...so just imagine). We live 2 hours from Vegas so the show's commercial is always playing on the radio.

Not at all...almost everything on American pop radio today is all production and zero musical talent. Cynical or not, while most (if not all) pop music is manufactured, ABBA managed to transcend that.

While I'm at it, a pop group from a non-English-speaking country staying so popular for so long is itself quite an accomplishment; not one group on the charts today will be able to claim relevance in 30 years. Wonder how absurd a price tag would come of a one-off performance similar to Zeppelin's O2 performance in 2007 (Trivia: Led Zeppelin's last studio album, 1979's In Through The Out Door, was recorded at ABBA's Polar Studios. Just thought I'd throw that in there since I'm a monster Zep fan)
