Wii and Online eBooks

On a whim, I used the Internet Channel on my Wii to access the ePubs I have uploaded to Bookworm. Not only can I access them, but reading them was a pretty pleasant experience.

Then I tried the free chapters Baen put on their website - yep, a pleasant read.

Cool, I can read books on my TV! Not sure why I would want to do that, but still neat

Can you simply open them without installing extra software?

You aren't installing extra software. The Internet Channel on the Wii allows you to surf the web from your Wii/TV. If a book is hosted on the web in some way - like the free books online at Baen, or the ePubs you can upload to Bookworm - then you can "surf" to that web address and look at the book.

(FYI, the browser used by the Internet Channel is Opera)

But don't you need software to read epubs? Or does that bookworm convert them to HTML?

You may be aware of this, but there is a plugin for Firefox (browser) for reading ePubs. It actually works pretty good... perhaps Opera has one as well?

It doesn't need any software to download to read the ePubs-not sure how its working its magic: http://bookworm.oreilly.com/about/

Looking at the source, I'm guessing its reading the XML file inside the ePub to display it in the browser-but it also shows the TOC in a side-frame. Pretty sweet!

edit: and Hatgirl, I'm going to try it with my PS3 browser next

Just tried the Project Gutenberg "Read Online" option. Readable, but the navigation column on the left and the lack of any kind of whitespace margin on the right means reading is a bit of a chore.

Just read an entire free story from Tor using the Wii. A thoroughly pleasant experience.
