Talking Hello All....

This is my first post to introduce myself....

I am new to mobileread.com and am hopeful with the help of others I may make a wise choice with my eReader purchase, which is my main reasoning for joining today. I am a child of the 60's so I feel I'm pretty technically literate, but probably not as much as I think I am.
My husband purchased a Sony eReader Pocket Edition for my birthday, however have yet to open it as I may return and purchase a Kindle in its place, possibly. So with that said, I am open to suggestions and advise.
* I guess my one concern is how important is the back light that the Kindle boosts? Is it a do or die scenario in order to fully enjoy the eReader?
* Downloading books...is it a hassle with the Sony, I've read both good and bad and that goes for the customer assistance line, I've read that the reps are hard to understand and aren't that helpful.

Any direction one could steer me would be very helpful and appreciated.

Other than all the above - I look forward to this forum for many technical reasons.

Thank you in advance to all!!!

Hi esmerelda and welcome to MobileRead. I've had a Sony 505 for over two years and really like it. And back lighting is not a big deal for me. And I get most my books from Kobo and the local library and it works fine

Be sure and let us know what you finally decide

HI & welcome to MR. Great gift from your husband.

Me personally, I would keep the Sony as you have more freedom on where to buy the books. I have a PRS600 and really love it. No problems with the light on the screen and the glare is so minimal I can easily ignore it.

But check out the forum and see what others have to say. I have only seen the kindle briefly in rl but I would not trade my Sony (might have to do with the fact that I am not in the US).

Welcome to MobileRead, Esmerelda.

um.......the Kindle has no 'backlight'. It uses "eink" technology which makes reading on the device as comfortable on the eyes as reading a paper book.

Enjoy your Sony....its an excellent device also.
