Calibre works OK with PRS + for me (only a week so far, new here I am).

A couple of questions - some of them may seem silly to ya'll, however, I haven't gotten to ask them before, and I was hoping one of ya'll would know.

1. With the folder structure, how many books can be stored on the SD card without the Reader getting brain freeze?

2. Exactly how difficult is it to add support for another format?

I have the Kindle PC and iTouch software and use that to read free Kindle books (big selection) and I constantly wonder why exactly someone can't add support for these formats to the Sony. Is it a space limitation, or complete incompatability (according to various sources, they both use Linux)? If it is a space limitation, could Adobe support be swapped out for Kindle format support? I have never managed to read an Adobe file on my reader - it always looks wrong. (Keep in mind, I know nothing about programming!)

Thank you for any replies - I have seen many posts that say you can't, however, no one ever seems to post "Why" you can't.

1) At the moment someone has managed to use 16 000 books. (with disabled card scanning). There is hope to solve this problem using mount/umount in the future versions of PRS+, then there will be no (reasonable) limit.

2) Hard. It requires not only good programming skills, but also outstanding reverse engineering skills. Igorsk has found a way to write custom viewers, but... It didn't work for me (probably while API has changed a bit meanwhile).

Last, but not least, having calibre and many other tools that can convert between formats in a mere seconds, is an in-ebook support really needed?

Thank you for the reply to my questions.
I was curious about the OS alterations because I used to have and HTC smartphone, and it seemed like the people over on XDA Developers could do incredible alterations on the OS - often having several different versions that had various features so that people could customize their phone for what they actually did with it, instead of a one size fits all approach.
My ultimate dream would be to have an ereader that you could read any file format on, or that you could customize the file formats on an as needed basis. It gets tiresome converting one format to another and another and another.
I used to just have everything as .txt files, and may go back to that - just the Sony didn't display them to my satisfaction when last I tried it.
I am excited about the 16k books though!!! I plan to install PRS+ this evening, and see how it works for me.

In my experience most formats will transfer to HTML with a bit of tweaking, this format is the perfect state to keep a library, as a custom CSS style sheet could be applied for each device as you upgrade.

I very much doubt that HTML (or HTM, in its correct term) will ever become depreciated.

However despite that I am happy with my library to be in LRF or EPUB.

(Hint: If you rename the .epub to .zip and open it, you will see a HTML file with a custom.css file to render it, which pretty much solidifies my statement above)

EDIT: I am very aware of the xda-developers site, having contributed down the years to various projects, I would not compare the two platforms, a HTC device ROM is significantly different to Linux on an eReader. A lot of crucial code is missing on an eReader that would make a device 'universal' code that would need to be custom written or ported over, with a much smaller development community. A HTC ROM merely gets massaged to get the results that people require since its an OS that is designed to accept 3rd party software and data input.

This project is by far the closest we'll see in a collective development project, its one to be proud of, and I for one am extremely impressed at the commitment.

the best peice of customisation that the PRS device can get is a boxing clever user that manages a correctly tagged library in a clean format.

Ok, I know this doesn't really belong here, but I just believe that here are a lot of people that have so much knowledge as to point me in the correct direction:

PRS-600 comes with 2 english dictionairies. As far as looking up words, the reader is already programmed for that. So I wondered if it is possible to just replace one of the two dictionairies with a different langue. The dictionairy would have to have proper formatting and so the reader works properly with it, it would probably have to be named according to the dictionairy being replaced, but shouldn't that somehow work?

I've checked the reader but couldn't find a file that does even look like something like that. Is there some hidden memory which a user cannot access? If so, is there a way to get to it?

Thanks for any info.

problems with custom epub fonts

Hello guys!
PRSPlus is working like a charm on my reader, except for one little thing that's really driving me nuts...

I have this style.css file in my /database/system/PRSPlus/epub folder, and the referred TTF fonts in the /fonts directory.... but nothing happens!! All my epubs look just the same as before

I don't know if my epubs have embedded fonts (most of them are the ones which came in a CD with the reader), maybe that is the problem
Anyway, I would appreciate if anyone could take a look at my css and bring some light

Or, if you have any sample epub without embedded fonts for testing purposes, that you could upload

Thank you very much

Porkupan is the best guy to ask about it. Afaik there were problem with using "big" dictionaries, it worked only whith "small" ones. That's all I know.

yolan
Custom css overrides even embedded fonts so it should work.

I am not sure that it would help, but normally stuff inside "url" should be in quotes, like this:

src: url("res:///Data/fonts/verdanab.ttf");

also check if the the filenames are correct (case matters). I'll test your css on my ebook tomorrow.

My style.css file is almost identical to yours and it works for every epub book I open including drm'd books that I have purchased.

1. Is the /fonts/ directory all lower case?

2. Does it make a difference that Verdana is a sans-serif font and you have the generic family as serif in the css file?

3. I thought maybe the 505 default font might be similar to verdana but the default is Bitstream's Dutch 801 Roman BT which is a serif font and not easily mistaken for verdana.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Code:
@font-face {
  font-family: "Fontin";
  font-weight: normal;
  font-style: normal;
  src: url(res:///Data/fonts/Fontin-Regular.ttf);
}

@font-face {
  font-family: "Fontin";
  font-weight: bold;
  font-style: normal;
  src: url(res:///Data/fonts/Fontin-Bold.ttf);
}

@font-face {
  font-family: "Fontin";
  font-weight: normal;
  font-style: italic;
  src: url(res:///Data/fonts/Fontin-Italic.ttf);
}

body {
  font-family: "Fontin", serif;
  widows: 0;
  orphans: 0;
}

p
{
text-indent:1.1em;
}

I can't get it to work... I've tried a couple of css from other people, but still no luck. It seem like the css is not being read, or the fonts, I don't know. Everything is in the right place though...

kartu,
did you have any success with my css?

dwanthny
yours isn't working for me either, but thank you for sharing your css

Thanks

Your css works fine for me. I've tried it with the following free book:

Hey, it's solved !!!
Thank you for your support.

I had the spanish version of PRS+ (surquizu's) and the epub font customization did not work.
Surquizu suggested me to get back to the original PRS+ english version. I did, and now it works, even after applying the spanish translated files. There must be some problem with the direct spanish installation procedure.

Thanks again

Hi, can you add the already released patch which adds pages per minute read counter, read time, and time until book end.
