I'm about a third of the way through * the girl with the dragon tattoo * by Stieg Larsson.

After a bit of a slow start it is turning into a great read.

Thoroughly recommended.

I just got "The Girl who Played with Fire" and made the mistake of reading the first few pages....before I knew it I was 20 pages along....man what a start.

I've got other things I need to finish first, but was very difficult pulling away from it.

Reading 'Gone with the Wind' because it is this month's MRBC book.

It's huge ; I started yesterday but didn't really expect to finish it. I thought I'd give it a few chapters, but then probably be bored and give it up for something shorter and more enjoyable. I wasn't going to force myself through a thousand page read if it looked like a struggle.

Now I'm mid-way through Part II; it's actually turning out to be a terrific read and a wonderful surprise .

OK, but felt like the prelude to greater things. Good characters, but obviously the start of something rather than a complete story in itself. Unsurprising, when your read the intro (which I usually leave to last), which explains the parallels to a situation near the start of the American War of Independence.

Next: Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams, which I've heard of but never got around to reading.

The Gathering Storm. From the Wheel Of Time.
I don't know if it's the new author, or me not reading a single WoT book for years, but this one was actually good. Things happened it this one. I just hope Mr. Sanderson keeps up the good work. And decides against making this final trilogy another 12-book cycle (since he already made the final book a trilogy).

I thought the same thing. The person who recommended it told me not to worry about the slow start that it really catches fire. It was an excellent read.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I read it already. It didn't have a happily ever after ending.

Oh I don't know; Shackleton got all his men safely home (unlike Scott).
'South' is a fantastic story of human endurance and inspirational leadership.

Hmmm, maybe 'The Worst Journey in the World' by Apsley Cherry-Gerard? That was about the Scott expedition that ended in tragedy, with Scott and some of his party dying on the way back from the South pole.

Just finished reading "The Things They Left Behind" by Stephen King......its a short story in his "Just After Sunset" short stories novel.

Excellent. I wonder if he wrote it as a catharsis....I know I haven't been able to forget that day.

Ummmmm.... Senate hearings....
From what little exposure they get here, it seems strange that they are called hearings. Noone seems to be hearing. Seems to be all about talking and posturing. Mind you, the "Inquiries" and "Select Committees" we have here aren't that different, so I'm not really in a position to comment.

Excellent book; one of my favourites (and one that stays permanently on by Cybook and Kindle -- and the paper version from the 80's stays on the bookshelfs). Actually, I love all of her books (that I've read) and would recommend the Damiano trilogy (no idea if they are available in ebook form, though).

Definitely!

Currently really enjoying Ken Follett's Pillars of Earth on the basis of several recommendations from people here.

I'm two thirds into The American Book of the Dead by Henry Baum. It started a little slow for me but then really took off. Part apocalyptic sci-fi and part psychological thriller with elements of noir and literary novels, this one really transcends genres. It feels like other books but also original -- always a good sign.

Steve
