The only problem with "comic book" as a term, is the possible ambiguity of the word "comic", some comic books are not comic at all.

You know the only real thing I could add to this discussion is that people shouldn't give a shit what other people are reading. Read what you like and shut up and let people enjoy what they like to read.

Doing anything else, discussing what is or isn't literature is just pretentious, and people just end up looking like pompous asses who think their opinion/taste is the gospel truth.

At least that specific issue is only a problem in English (as far as I'm aware)

What?! You mean it isn't? Oh, my

I'm afaid can't agree with your opinion that everything is equally good, and that we thus should not discuss quality.

An interesting point. According to Wikipedia the term was originally applied to works with "comic" themes but has evolved to encompass all sequential graphical narratives.

I thought the term 'graphic novel' had become popular specifically in order to avoid this issue. That not all 'comics' are comical, that is.

It's more the tone. People can discuss whether a book is good or not. Talk about the quality of writing, the plot, character development etc.

But that doesn't mean that people should go around knocking whole genre's as junk, and implying that people who read romance, fantasy etc. and not classic literature are simpletons who are rotting their minds.

That's a bunch of pretentious horse shit IMO. Just a way for pompous asses to act like their tastes are superior.

I'm into movies like most of you bookworms are into reading. But I don't go around bashing people who only watch popcorn action flicks and nothing else.

What am I then? I read what I would myself call junk (or 'fluff'), as well what is usually classified as 'literary' works. I also think the literary works are 'better' than the junk, but I have no problems with reading either.

Uh, well, I think knowledge can be gained but discussion of any topic and exchanging points of view. It may not matter on an individual basis, but may be important on a larger scale.

I'd say you're the more typical reader then and hopefully don't go around insulting people for reading fantasy, romance or whatever you think isn't worth reading personally.

One can have their own tastes, stuff they think is great, ok, or crap, without having to insult people who read stuff they think is fluff or junk.

To each their own and all that.

Agreed. But discussions are more fruitful if the tone isn't one of condescension and making people with different tastes/opinions feel inferior.

You know, what I reacted to in your posts was the implicit assumption that people had been insulting other over their reading tastes, I honestly haven't seen this here in this thread. I didn't think it was necessary to bring it up then.
