I never understood Amazon Prime - how has it saved you a fortune? I get everything delivered free, I just have to wait a day or two longer. I can understand you thinking it's great - if fast delivery is important to you - but how does it save money?

Not everything ships free and sometimes you want/need it faster. If that's the case, you same money.

We had a trial Prime account over the holiday season... and while we never pay for shipping unless we have to, it was nice to get stuff 2day shipped for free.

I would certainly sign up for Prime if I got a free Kindle as a bonus.

I'm the same as BOb. I never signed up because I didn't mind waiting an extra couple days. Plus, most of my purchases are now ebook purchases. Although I did use Amazon a lot for Christmas this year.

But I too would sign up for Prime if I got a free Kindle as a bonus.

Same here-I like the way Ben put it because I'd be paying for the Kindle-Prime means nothing to me. (Not that I wouldn't take advantage of it, but I won't pay for it.)

But I won't sign up in 'expectation' that I'll get a Kindle. I'll wait until it's actually offered. If I miss out (e.g. it's only offered to 'current' Prime customers) then I miss out-I certainly don't *need* a Kindle, but am willing to try one out for $80.

What if Amazon required a 3 year Amazon Prime commitment to get the FREE Kindle? What if they required a 5 year commitment?

I just don't know if they'll be able to offer the $79 deal, at one year, without losing money.

3 or 5 years would be a total commitment of $240/$400, which wouldn't tempt me. Whether they'd lose money depends on what the Kindles cost them - or what they would cost if they did the massive order that this would generate - plus the costs of delivering Prime, less the benefits of additional business.

I can't see it working for them, personally.

I wouldn't say it rules it out by any means, but I'm sure Amazon will stick with their proprietary ways as long as they can and then will go with the flow. They are good and serious competitors.

I always believed that there was room for this type of deals: giving away the device or charging a minimal fee + some kinda membership fee giving access to some or unlimited books

. Maybe I'm dreaming but that'd be so cool

Prime is great because (a) you don't have to worry about a minimum order value -even one cheap book ships free next-day delivery (in the UK) plus (b) you can include your whole family so my 3 sons all get their deliveries free too. Must have saved a fortune. But I'll take a free kindle if they're going...but I fear its one of these 'too good to be true' things so probably isn't true.

I love Prime! Now I hardly ever have to get out of my chair for anything except calls of nature and signing for deliveries.
