Just a recommendation, if you travel a lot (like me) an Apple Airport Express is a very worthwhile investment.
Thanks for the great link! I've never heard of it before. It's going to make my life so much easier. Needless to say I'm going to be ordering one immediately!

It comes in very handy sharing your wired hotel internet connection with all your devices. Many have WiFi, but there's quite a few that still don't. It's small, you can set it up and pretty much forget about it, and it just works. Hope you enjoy yours!

I think that if you read what you said, you'll realize that you are going to buy version 2 of the iPad when it comes out in a year or 18 months.

Which seems to me to say, save the $130 you'd pay for 3G on your iPad1 to get a head start on buying your iPad2.

I work from home part-time and it'll be great to have an instant-on device with a large screen that I can use to jump on servers or user's desktops without always having to be tethered to my desk or dragging a laptop around. This is especially attractive considering that I spend part of each day watching a toddler, and will soon be adding a newborn to the mix - I need something easily portable with no wires and a minimum of moving parts to deal with.
Hmm. So what you are saying is that when I'm sitting with my iPad in Atlanta, I will be able to access my iMac in Chicago? Listen to music stored on the external?

Hmm. Now that does make some sense. In my experience, hotels with wifi charge for it, & my employer won't pay for it since I'm supposed to use a Blackberry for business travel. Which I don't.

But wired hotels are generally free with their internet access, or so it seems to me. So an Airport Express would not only be practical, but likely free.

Yeah, I'm going to have a somewhat superfluous MacBook around the house, too. I think I'm going to hook it up to my Tivo & see what I can do with it.

Are you saying that you don't have to use Airport Utility to get it to working right in a wired hotel?

99% of hotel networks use dhcp. that leaves your personal wifi network, which i would imagine you don't need to reconfigure very often.

So, of course I asked for a Sony eReader at Christmas because I was certain that Apple's iPad pricepoint would be, at minimum, $900 or so.

I have my eReader after years of reading on a PDA (Palms in various iterations, ending with the T|X.) I have discovered that I actually have more eyestrain with the e-ink technology.

Like may who have commented here, I have discovered with my eReader just how often I read in dim or less than optimum light. The jury is still out on the eReader for me, and I'm finding that I really do want an iPad. I will, however wait.

I got to test the Apple Newton (anyone else remember that thing), way back in the day. I remember thinking, "oh, this is the best Apple can do, I wonder what the rest of the world's brains will add to this?"

For a long time there was nothing, and then suddenly we had a PDA explosion.

I am hoping the next generation iPad comes out slightly smaller (the current one almost exactly measures two PRS 600's side-by-side). Or...even better, another developer will step up and the same thing that happened with the Newton/PDA thing will happen with the iPad.

Lastly, I want one because I'm a die-hard Mac person and, as someone else here said, it's pretty. <grin>

It's a no-brainer for me

I can't wait! I love my sony reader 505 but it's only good for prose. I have 6 bookcases stuffed with art books, illustration magazines, computer, geology, archeology etc books which will be more accessible on a quick coloured display. I have replaced most of my fiction with ebooks, and I foresee the day when all those heavy books I treasure (literally 100s) will be on one small device.

And the little piles of art, science and computer magazines by my favourite chair and bedside table are gone. I can't wait to download magazines on the ipad.

I'm also thrilled that i will be able to sketch and draw on the ipad. I do draw on my ipod touch, but having a bigger screen will be incredible.

I'm puzzelled by all the apple haters. They seem to have so much personal identity tied up in their ability to write code, that they are threatened when some people just want stuff that just works. Why, I don't know. They can still write their code, while I'm drawing, reading books and magazines, editing photos, surfing and watching tv and movies all in glorious colour on my ipad . There is room for both.

not really. i set it up once with the apple utility, set up my SID, password, encryption method, etc. the trick is to set it up in bridge mode. then you use the hotel's dhcp servers on all your devices. the hotel just thinks they are all plugged in to the ethernet. you go through whatever login page you have to and go surf happily.

i stay in a variety of hotel chains and am a platinum member of many brands. there is no consistency in wired vs. wireless, free vs. charged that i have ever found. silly.

an added bonus, if you have a co-worker or family member in your room or one nearby, they can use it too.

i do fire up the utility once in a while to update the firmware, a painless process which has never lost my settings, etc. it's even discovered other APE's out there from time to time.

.
Do you set it up at home, and then just plug it in at the hotel, or do you have to tweak it at the hotel?

Reason I ask is that I think you need to have a laptop to set it up, & I never travel with my laptop.

i set it up once on the road. since then i have not changed any of the settings although i have upgraded the firmware a few times when i thought to run the apple utility. setup does require the utility, there is no web interface to manage the unit. you could set it up at home with a laptop or desktop but you'd have to be sure all your settings were right, if you had an issue out on the road and didn't have a laptop available it would be hard to fix.

the management utility is available for windows and macos.

The sony reader helped me overcome:
