Waiting a while for competitors might take long... It is only now that real competitors to the iPhone are really coming in the market. And the iPhone has been here for 3 years more or less...

You might have noticed that I won't lack reading devices. However, I am enthralled by the iPad.

When the iPhone came out, there was really no other OS with an UI that came even close. But 2010 is different. Android 2.1 is here, and while I don't think it's as good as the iPhone UI, it is at least in the running, and it is developing fast. There are a lot of Android products coming to market this year. If Android can polish their UI fast, they'll be able to have an even fight with the iPad (and the iPhone), qnd will have at least one significant advantage, Flash capability. If someone adds a good stylus input to the finger-touch, it will make Android very appealing. I doubt the prices will be lower for the Androids, but if the UI and features are there, this just might be The Year of the Android in mobile computing. |

Scottjl -- My decision is definitely 3G (so I can check email and web surf without wifi) but very little memory (16G). My iPhone has very little on it. I guess I don't need my music with me all the time. What else do you feel you need the memory for? [ i.e. persuade me why I should think about more than the lowest memory configuration ] |

@badgoodeb - well, i travel for weeks at a time (for work and vacation). and while i carry a laptop with me i don't feel like loading the laptop up with media just to send it over to the ipad so it's easier for me to load up at home, then hit the road. right now i have a 32g iphone and it does me just fine, but a little more won't hurt either. my rule is this. get more than you think you need, as long as you can afford it. and be sensible. lol. the $130 price for the 3g is a little overboard though imho, and since i have wifi everywhere, or can tether off my cell phones, i'm trying to decide if i want it or not.

I think just my unedited digital photo library is well over 150Gb. The iPhone's screen is too small for most of this kind of viewing, but the iPad's screen size should be usable. |

I have an iPhone, a MacBook, an iMac and a wireless Airport Network based on a Time Machine with two Airport Expresses. I also have a 3rd generation nano. In other words, I'm all Mac'd up. My ebook readers are a couple of Sonys, 300 & 505, and, of course, my iPhone.
In this environment, an iPad is (1) my full sized ebook reader and (2) a whole lot easier to use as I move around the house. I expect to set things up so that my iPhone includes whatever ebook apps I have on my iPad, so that to a large extent, it is a miniPad. Plus, of course, I'll have both of them synced to Instapaper, and iCal, & Safari, etc. The only thing missing in this neat little picture is a 300/505 sized ebook reader which coordinates with the iUniverse. The Sonys don't do it right now, although Stanza is a possibility for integrating the Sonys with epub. I've considered going Amazon (Kindle app, Kindle readers) since Instapaper (a basic necessity) plays well with Kindle, but (1) the iPad costs no more than a Kindle DX, and does so much more and (2) the Kindle 2 is too large for the kind of portability I want in a small edevice. Basically, it seems to me that anyone looking for a full sized ebook reader who leans PC might well decide to go KDX/Sony900, particularly if they don't have a wireless setup. The extra 15-30 bucks a month for G3 on the iPad would be a bummer. But for those of us with Macs, the iPad seems to me to be the clear choice. |

Actually I loved iTunes right from the start, but especially in the last few years once I really understood all that one can do with it. Now; all my hundreds of audiobooks, hundreds of music albums, movies and of course Apps are all in one place. I was really disappointed to hear that iBooks won't be a pre-loaded APP. I was imagining all my ebooks (from many sources) and all my photos, all neatly in one place ie. iTunes. I would guess that most homes that have laptops, have WiFi these days, but even if some don't, the add on of iPad with spur them on. Don't you think? I don't know how I ever survived without WiFi before! |

I think what he meant is given the number of Apple products he already has, there's a lot of reason to stick with Apple and get an iPad as opposed to a less Mac/Apple friendly eReader.
And while Books won't be pre-loaded, you'll probably be able to download it from the Apple store on day one, if not other eReader applications (like Stanza, Kindle, Classics, etc.) Just a recommendation, if you travel a lot (like me) an Apple Airport Express is a very worthwhile investment. |

Everything I did on my Kindle and do on my MacBook* can be done on the iPad, so I'm (happily) trading two devices for one. The Kindle's already been sold; the MacBook is next.
I was lukewarm on the Kindle's e-Ink--yeah, the text was crisp, but the contrast wasn't so great, the page-turn delay was an annoyance whenever I wanted to flip back a few pages to recheck something, and I was feeding the book light batteries. I've read ebooks on Handspring Visor, a Palm IIIxe, an iPod touch, and now my iPhone. Eyestrain isn't a problem. Also, I love the way my iPhone works. I'm excited about apps being designed to take advantage of the larger screen size of the iPad. I'll be getting the 64GB wi-fi version with a bluetooth keyboard. (*The MacBook isn't my main computer. I use it for web browsing, feed reading, email checking, word processing and/or video watching whenever I want to get away from my desk.) |
