Glare on PRS900 and screen cover

Has anyone put a screen cover over the PRS900 to reduce the glare?
Does it work with the touch screen?

Reducing glare with screen covers/protectors has not worked with the 600 and probably will not work with the 900. If the glare minimizes your enjoyment of the device (to the point where you're constantly aware of it) it may be best just to return it.

I agree with SCION. I've used PDAs and readers for 15+ years, and I have yet to find a screen protector that did anything but protect the screen, which is what they are designed to do. As far as reabability they all have made the device harder to read because they add a thin, somewhat translucent film on top of the screen. In other words, they make they screen at least a little blurry.

The key to the 900 is plenty of front lighting. Get a good reading light or use it in direct sunlight. I'm currently debating taking mine back because of the reading difficulties. It works really well when you have good front lighting, but terrible when the lighting is low. Plus I notice that it does cause eyestrain even in good lighting, something my 300 does not do. So like me, you have to decide if the high price tag is worth your application of the reader. I only use it as a portable PDF reader, so I might be better served returning it. Don't get me wrong, I still think it is an excellent reader for many/most applications.

After all that talk, that rather odd comment (imho) "I think most of the complaints against the 900's screen are from people with little or no intuition or imagination. They look at the screen under one lighting condition and judge the 900. NO e-ink screen looks good in low light." which made NO sense to me and you might return it?

You need a floodlight to read the Daily Edition which some won't mind and some will.

Has there been a nook update that allows you to jump to a specific page in a book? I guess there's no rush, after all, some won't mind and some will.

There is actually a noticeable difference between the 900 and the 300/505/nook/Kindle/etc screens in low light. Say you have a reading light with a dimmer. Start at the brightest setting, and then dim it slowly. The first to become hard to read would be the 600 and 900. The readers that don't put anything on top of the e-ink screen will become hard to read later on (less light).

The touch screen hurts readability because of the reflections, in two ways: less light reaches the e-ink making it appear dimmer, and the reflected light acts to obscure the e-ink. With good lighting focused on the screen, you overcome both of these.

Because my apartment lighting is usually not overhead lighting (built around floor lamps plugged into the wall), something like the 900 is harder to use without a dedicated reading lamp nearby (within 5 feet of the reader). Something I never had to do with my 505.

As you said, readability has more to do with the type of lighting you are using. I found my Iliad and the PRS-300 also hard to read in the house with lights on, only because there isn't enough light. At the same time, it's a struggle to read a p-book in light like this. For me, dedicated light for reading is a must - be it a floor-lamp nearby or a light you attach to your e-book reader.
I don't expect any miracles from the PRS-900 in this sense either. The first time I saw a PRS-600 outdoors I was shocked by the glare. However after playing with it for a minute or two it became a non-issue for me.
FCOL, even a glossy magazine has glare if the light is wrong!

That's an expensive gamble. I want it to work for you, but I don't think it will. People have been down this road many times with the 600.

I've got a 600, and I'm just not having these glare issues that others are having. Are you reading with a flashlight in a cave or what? I'm thinking I just must not be as picky.

If the 600 or 900 is your first ebook reader, you don't notice it. If it's not, you do.

E-ink company are currently working on a touch sensitive layer UNDER the e-ink screen, to avoid this problem.
