Note that some lit-snobs would refuse to read higher mathematics treatises, etc., too.....

LOL, I don't think there was much else in Spain at the time, other than chivalry romances and scriptures.

On the other hand, Cervantes was clearly influenced by Italian literature, particularly Boccaccio.

And that's the rest of the story....

One person's junk is another person's treasure.

Everyone should read what they want and feel like. My own reading habit is rather all over the place and it does include junk, classics, winners of various and dubious awards. So what - I read. Doesn't make me smarter or more stupid than other people.

Lit-snobs can continue looking down their noses at the rest of us. I just feel sorry for them as they exclude themselves from a phantastic world of pleasure.

I read for fun. Period. Could care less if I come out the other end "improved".

Agreed. One's tastes should hopefully develop and mature over time. I'm finally beginning to see why those 'good' books are good/better, and I enjoy them in a way I couldn't have 10-15 years ago - they would have been way over my head. I do think it's important to read varied - if only to help developing language and vocabulary - though it's also a good to get exposed to new ideas once in a while

many "good" classics were once junk reading. there may be a way to differentiate junk reading from good reading, but much defining these categories are opinions, and differentiating opinions, at that.

I wasn't thinking of classics myself, only of books with literary value such as an interesting language or structure or ideas.

Can you make that available in LRF or Mobi, please.

That reminds me.....I think all passionate readers have one thing in common........

When you were a kid.......did you parents tell you to "stop reading that box/can/book and finish eating!!!"?

I find my reading habits go in cycles - political, social nonfiction, horror, mysteries, current fiction, romance. I was reading political and social nonfiction right before my current romance cycle, which is a repeat of the cycle I went through at ages 18-21.

All the time. When I was about 12, I was reading a book while riding my bike. I ran into a fence, got an infection, and had to be hospitalized. I remember my parents asking me if I was reading a book at the time of the accident. I strongly denied it.
