Check out partimage, I use it to back up my ubuntu system. I run it off a System Restore CD because I'm backing up my main OS but you can install it if you want to back up an attached device.

Actually, this is the tool I already thought of.
But as I have not read anything regarding using it for this particular end, I got some doubts that it can really be employed.

I would have thought it would be possible but I don't know it for a fact. You could probably find out for sure on the partimage forums.

Just a short info that I installed PRS+ now, without doing a backup
of the german 1.4 firmware before. There was half an hour during
downgrading the firmware, that I thought I bricked my reader,
but now everything works fine. So far I did not recognize
any change to the worse in PDF handling.

So even if would have prefered to have a backup of the
original firmware, it seemingly wasn't necessary, at least
not for the reasons I was afraid of.

Hey, great to hear you finally made the upgrade. I think the custom firmwares are awesome. I just bought a prs-600 a week ago and took the risk of reflashing as I was missing the clock. I really got used to the clock and of course, the 600 came without that.
I passed the prs-505 on to my wife and it looks as if she's really appreciating digital reading as she has poor eyesight and can magnify the fonts (lol, usually she accepts that I go out and buy toys, but she usually doesn't play with them or shows real interest). She also appreciates the clock. While reading, she can track time so that she doesn't miss picking up our little one at school.

There are only updated for the USA version, but if you want I have copy (new_opt.img) of the German firmware and UK firmware for install with the Igorsk flasher.

No, that's the only one.

As far as I know, if anyone needs to reset to a different version and the updater's the only thing that works then the only option is to use the US 1.1 updated then reflash via an SD card.

The problem is, igork's flasher updates only FskFS part of the image (/opt). While Sony reader updates everything (RootFS -> /).

So I guess, from your experience, UK FskFS is compatible with US RootFS? (porkupan has mentioned that some versions are compatible, while some are not)

Yes, I can confirm that that particular combo is fine as I've been running it for quite a while now. I've not tried any other regional FskFS's though.

Hi everybody!

First I want to say, I'm very impressed of all your excellent work and efforts.

As the US-Updater contains one (1) raw.bootimg.img and two (2) cramfs-imges: cramfs.Fsk.img and cramfs.Rootfs.img, I was able to extract all 3 img's with a modified script from JeffElkin.

But the log shows several more partitions:

I have saved mtd14, mtd15 and mtd9 at the moment.

The 1.4 BootImg seams to be binary identical to the 1.1 version, exept off the slightly larger filesize.
After extraction with cramfsck.exe both the rootfs and the fsk partitions show differences between 1.1. and 1.4

Furthermore I managed to inject kartu's prs+ loader "PRSPlus.js" in the "applicationStart.xml" and flashed this based on the original 1.4.0.23260 files.

After rebooting, I can see the modified structure of the main menu, greyed out, rotating arrows show the scanning of the internal memory, and after a while... my prs-505 reboots.

After connecting the device to the PC I removed "_BrowseFolders.js" from the addons folder and the device reboots fine again.
The clock is shown (I added the SHD_TIME variable to "main.xml" and "applicationStart.xml" too).

The "PRS+ Settings" Menu is shown under Settings (Einstellungen) too,
But if I press "0" to open them, the device reboots again.

Maybe there is a isue with the way the objects get cloned, because of different versions of FSKChache.xsb in version 1.4 compared to 1.1.0.1840?

Two last things:
1) IMHO it should be possible to append Igorsk "flash_opt.sh", in a way that at least the rootfs.img could be flashed to,
by adding NEW_ROOTFS_SIZE var and by duplicating all code referencing NEW_OPT.IMG and Fsk using NEW_ROOTFS.IMG and Rootfs instead.

2) By patching 6 bytes in "eBookMSCDeviceUpdater.dll" at offset 0x1509 from 0F 85 91 01 00 00 to 90 90 90 90 90 90 it "should" be possible to use the sony flasher with any Fsk, Rootfs and BootImg.
Actually this patch "should" bypass the checksum-test.
But I hadn't the eggs to try it at the moment.

My intention was to find a way to restore 1.2 1.3 1.4 versions of firmware, in case user decides that PRS+ is not worth losing whatever there is, in localized versions.

I would expect all BootImg to be the same and some Rootfs to differ.

PS
Igork's flasher has a "run custom script" feature, when it runs script.sh located in the root of the card. In case you'd need that for experiments.
