This assumes certain things about e-ink screen pricing which currently are unknown to us who aren't privy to the costs of buying these screens.

I know CSS when it's used with HTML. So epub is basically a web page and very far different from a PDF?

It would help if you attach or provide a link to an epub document containing a full page image. Perhaps IREX's implementation is borked. It would be interesting to compare EPUB implementations across multiple devices.

I'll do that once I get access to my home box again (probably later tonight). I have to spend some time on it first to produce something I can post here.

@Kolenka, the images are scaled with the selected font size. Can you change the font size in the emulator? Default setting is small, which will resize the image to a smaller one. At "medium" font, the image is 1:1 scaled. At larger font sizes, the images are enlarged.

I just noticed that myself... that is a really wonky way to do it, and seems to violate the behavior of practically every ePub reader on the market so far.

I wanted to reply that "ADE does this too...". But I guess Adobe has fixed this bug with the latest upgrade (1.7.2). The 1.7.1 PC software release did also scale the images with the font size (I am 99.9% sure of that...because I've seen ADE do it). Since IREX has based their firmware on the SDK they get from Adobe, I would expect that this bug is fixed in a new firmware update.... somewhere under "minor changes". Zoom and annotate is what we want!

You're lucky indeed. I'll look around on the suggested sites.

At this time we have nothing. Absolutely nothing. There are four major p-book reseller, only one of them offering e-books: almost 20 thousand english and german and a few hundred french titles at approximately 1.5 to 3.5 times the price as Amazon or B&N sells (the same book). Shame. :-(

What exactly do you want to know?

I spent 4 years in scool, won a competition and worked for several big and smaller publishing houses for over 18 years as a typesetter / designer. I have both the skills, software environment and experiences to do this. Now I'm going to dive deep in ePub.

Whatever, if you have any question, just feel free to ask!

Actually, most European publishers, if they ever decide to publish ebooks, go for epubs. Amazon is the main cause for this, as they bought Mobipocket and limited the use of this DMR'd format.

The main problem is the slackness of most European publishers, who (exceptions are always there, naturally!) don't see the need for ebooks.

As a blind can't see the tree ahead.
Almost 10 thousand titles available on the gray/black "market" as close to press-quality rescanned, proofed and well formatted ebooks.
It's not the question of thier (the publisher's) actual marketing, but a question of why are they totally blind. Nothing will change until most of them are crying because of the serious amount of illegal content, instead of, for example, re-publishing all the books of the last 10-15 years with an acceptable price. That's a question of a few hours of work per title.

@Kolenka,

I checked another document: from the Adobe example library
Download the "Alice in Wonderland" ebook, this has pictures in it. When you change the font size in ADE (on a PC), the pictures also scale with the fontsize.

On the other hand. I downloaded a free ebook from mobileread (Reprinted Pieces by Charles Dickens, Illustrated) in epub format. Opened it with ADE on my PC. Here the pictures do not scale with the fontsize.... I wonder why? Is there some additional formatting in this ebook, that is not there in the Alice in Wonderland ebook?

Some implementations of mobile ADE have scaled images with font size, but I don't think most versions do. I reported scaling images (so that they got larger than the screen) as a bug in the original Hanlin ADE, and it was taken out of later versions.

The easiest version for everyone to check against is the Sony eBook Library, since its viewer is a desktop implementation of mobile ADE. I'm pretty sure it does not scale images with font size. The Desktop ADE is not currently using the same code base as mobile ADE, but that will reportedly change some time this year (the next major update to desktop ADE will be more like mobile ADE).

The pictures in the Alice in Wonderland book from the adobe website scale with font, also when opened with the Sony eBook Library.
I reckon I need a epub-editor to sort this out...

Found this ePub validation tool
Both files from my earlier post are not properly formatted ePub files... The tool gives a lot of errors for both ebooks...
