I read two Star Trek TNG books and they were dreadful. I normally like this sort of thing, but these were post-movie and I miss the old Enterprise and the crew being all together. What can I say, change is hard I will not be reading any further books in the series set post-movies.

I am going to be reading some multiformat and free stuff for awhile. I am not impressed with mainstream publishing right now, either in content or in behaviour...

reading and writing

The New Yorker (Dec 18, I think) hadf a bunch of reviews of novels written in Arabic and translated into English. I have finished "Girls of Riyadh" (not available on Kindle) and enjoyed it. I just finished "The Yacoubian Building" on Kindle and loved it.

Now I have some HOT NEWS! I just uploaded my new novel, "Flesh and Grass," to Kindle. It'll be available ANY MINUTE! It's about a blind kid growing up in Colonial Delaware, a very rough and unpredictable place in the 1600's. Who knew?

I rather like this. It requires rather slower reading than my normal fare - light on plot but rich in other ways. I can see why it's considered a modern classic, and one can't help wondering how much (if at all) Tolkien was influenced by it. Since he was working on his stories of Elves (the ones that were eventually published in part in "The Silmarillion") before this was first published, perhaps it's just another case of a coincidence of timing. Does anyone know?

Just finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson and it was every bit as good as others have said. Superb character development.

Next The Four Just Men by Edgar Wallace

Just finished Catcher in the Rye, not having read it before.

I must admit I can't see what all the fuss was/is about. But then it has just occurred to me that as it was an ebook, (don't ask), how can I be sure it was the original text and not adulterated in any way.

After Brookmyre's Pandaemonium I listened to The Gates(of Hell are about to open. Mind the Gap) by John Connolly. I was amazed by the similarity of the central theme: Science and religion, nuclear accelerators, multiple universes and demons. The books of course were totally different, but still, reading the one after the other was a strange coincidence.

In the meantime I also finished The Convent by Panos Karnezis. Maybe my favourite greek author. I read his three previous books in greek, but this one in english. He writes in english first and then translates himself to greek, so I was interested to see the english version. It was equally good of course.

Now reading a collection of short stories placed in Istanbul called Istanbul Noir and I just started to listen to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in audiobook. Sounds interesting so far.

Just finished Stieg Larsson's, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo."

I can recommend this mystery. I've read quite a number of reviews of this book, and many people say that it is the equivalent of a Literary Mystery. I feel that's somewhat correct. For me, however, it's more "Mystery" than "Literature." It's still a wonderful read.

There is HUGE character development, which I love in any kind of writing. The writing is engaging, and the story slow and delicious to develop - but in a positive way.

I enjoyed it so much that I stopped my reading of Stephen King's recent, enjoyable tome, and started reading the second book in this series by Larsson.

I was smart and finished Under the Dome before I started The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo or I would have probably done the same thing. Mind you, I was so determined to see Big Jim and Jim Jr get their comeuppances that I might have hung in there.

I also thought of The Girl as a bit Police Procedural in the way they carefully reviewed the evidence and interviewed so many people. I was also completely unprepared for who he found when he makes the trip towards the end.

Thanks for the reviews/followups on "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" I must get to that one. I have purchased it already and it's in my to-read list...getting closer to the top every time I read a review.

I see several users in here reading the Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson.

Another very appreciated author back here in Sweden is Jan Guillou who has written everything from spy/thriller books to historical fictions.

One especially good series is about the crusades circling around the Knight Templars in the 1100s spanning over 3 books:
# The Road to Jerusalem, originally Vägen till Jerusalem, (1998)
# The Knight Templar, originally Tempelriddaren, (1999)
# The Kingdom at the End of the Road

More info can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arn_Magnusson

You will certainly get a lot of Sweden's medieval history if you decide to pick it up.
