If you like reading on your iPhone, except for the little screen, the iPad should be great. I played around with my iPhone and PRS-300 last night and came to an interesting conclusion. With the little iPhone screen I got as much readable text and on the larger 300's screen. The reason is the font has to be much larger on the 300 because of the contrast/non-backlit issue. The iPhone has fantastic contrast, and the backlit screen makes it so easy to see.

One of the reasons I bought a dedicated reader was to get a larger screen than my iPhone. I got the larger screen, but no real advantage over the smaller screen.

So why don't I just sell the 300 and read on my iPhone? Battery life......

I've not been satisfied with any dedicated reader devices I've owned, specifically the Sony PRS-505 and Kindle 2. I have been quite satisfied reading on PDAs and smartphones over the years though.

I think the e-ink readers just cost vastly too much money for the user experience on offer. Long battery life and a bistable screen is ... well it's interesting at least. But it's not worth the price of a full on PDA or whatever else you can get for $260+. I know they have their fans, even because of how little they do. And that's fine. Dedicated devices have their place. But these devices also suffer more important problems such as awful UI design, painfully slow refresh rates, even for just basic navigation. They often render documents poorly and very rarely get updated to fix such problems. Just consider the Sony Readers and their ePub "support." Or the experience of reading technical PDFs on a very slow screen.

So while I still kinda think those readers are cool in certain ways, I definitely count myself dissatisfied with them. For what it's worth, I thought the display of the PRS-505 with an LRX book was really nice looking I was never very happy with the K2 though as the screen suffered nasty ghosting and had worse contrast than the Sony, for whatever reason (whether fonts, or backdrop color, or the illusion from the white border, I don't know or care).

Luckily there are some hopeful new screen technologies up and coming, so maybe paper-like reading experiences will be coupled with better user experiences in the next few years.

I'm not unhappy with my Sony Reader. I love it but Stanza on my iPhone has ruined my Sony Reader experience. The whole reading experience is awesome using Stanza:

- fast, animated page changes
- fast rotation to landscape/portrait mode
- immediate access to tons of paid and free books
- syncing with Calibre!!

I'd be all over a device if it were e-inkish with color, backlighting, had some of the qualities of Stanza on my iPhone, and supported video.

I've had every Kindle and the Sony 505, 600 and 300. Each one has had its issues. I didn't care for the first Kindle. I like the DX as a pdf reader but not much as a book reader. I love the 2d generation Kindle but it isn't as comfortable in the hand as the Sony readers. The Sony 505 screen went bad very quickly. The Sony 600 screen is a bit hard to see in some light and I don't much use the touch. The Sony 300 lacks the dictionary feature, which I love.

Still I don't care. I'm someone who reads over 100 books a year. I always have books (note the plural) with me. My house is inundated with books even though I dispose of them regularly. To be able to carry a couple dozen books around with me in a lightweight format and store them in the cloud or on my computer is heavenly. The limitations of each reader are nitpicks. I could say that pbooks are too heavy, I often don't like the font, they deteriorate over time, and they take up too much room.

I suspect that people who are heavy readers often just want to read, and most of the ebook readers on the market work fine for that.

Without this technology, I would not be able to read as safely.

I love my reader, use it every day, and definitely consider myself very satisfied. Is there room for improvement? Of course - there's no such thing as a device that can't be improved in some way (color e-ink with instant page turns and a price point of $50, for example ). For me the question is "Do I enjoy reading on my reader as much as reading a paper book?" and in my case the answer is an emphatic "YES", and in fact I very much prefer my reader to a paper book.

I was extremely satisfied with it, until today, until someone made me think it was a razor, until I tried to shave with it. I did not get a clean close shave. I am now only satisfied with it for certain uses.

well i'm satisfied. i did my research before my purchase. i knew exactly what i was getting with my reader touch and it performs exactly as advertised.
