I always find it annoying when news stories try to explain the hip new abbreviations used by teens today, when if you research it, many of the abbreviations (like BRB, ROTFLMAO) date back 20 years or more in Usenet or IRC or similar. All those parents would have known the terms as teens, too-- if they hadn't grown up computer illiterate.

I've been using the "darknet" since before any of today's teens were born.

Amazon admits that they will fail

Interesting, since they managed to strong-arm Hachette in 2008. Maybe they think Sargent is a tougher cookie?

Son of a %$#*!!! You can bet the house that the other publishers will follow.

New York Times blurb on Amazon's capitulation.

Well, that's it for me. I'm selling my Sony (Yes I know it's not Amazon, but this will be all publishers soon enough), purchasing some new shelves and buying only second-hand paperbacks from now.

The whole ebook and book market is a joke, a sick joke played both on the audience and the spineless authors alike.

Why get rid of the Sony? You can still support independent authors of ebooks and read public domain books.

True. Didn't think of it that way. It's just so depressing to see that we're getting shafted again and nobody is doing a thing about it. We're powerless as usual, with no way to affect any reasonable change, while the companies steam roll over us once again.

Not fully powerless. But for all intents and purposes, yes we are, against the big house publishers. They're only going to do what they want to do. So I won't be buying their books. Hopefully they'll dig their own grave.

I with you there, and another thing, /rage dump /every single one of those capitulating mother***cking writers who were on the side of Apple and Macmillan, can go take a flying leap. I'll make it my single duty to tell everyone and everyone I can about how spineless and cowardly they all were. /end rage dump /

Well, I'll be saving a lot of money since I will not buy any ebook over $9.99.

An interesting side note, the first thing you see at http://us.macmillan.com/ is a book called "Priceless" with a subtitle of "The Myth of Fair Value (and How to Take Advantage of It)".

I think that about sums it up.

I won't be buying any books over $9.99 either. I also think I'll start trying out some of the lesser known authors from smaller publishers, and if they're good I'll take the time to give them a good review on Amazon.

You know who must be rubbing their hands together with glee right now, the Smashwords people. I think if we each resolve to read one book from there a month and review it, we can start putting together a list for ourselves of which indie books are the good ones. Then we will all have stuff to read.

I don't think we are powerless I think if a lot of people are upset we can make a change by not buying ebooks over $9.99 and also not buying the associated print version of the book. That will probably drive them to either lower prices or get out of ebooks and I don't see the latter happening with the ebook market being hot.

Companies tend to notice when they take a hit in the pockets.

Again, I'm already angry with the $9.99 price with the way ebooks are formatted now. I can understand a premium for hardcover books or trade paperbacks because you get higher quality paper , etc. but ebooks is digital and probably cost less to distribute and obviously less to mass produce. Given that and the lack of consistent formatting and editing for some books really make me feel like they should be price half of mass paperback prices.

They seem to charge a lot compared to the quality we get. Most of the ebooks I've purchased don't even include the cover art.

Oh and not to mention that if I buy an ebook, It also probably includes some sort of DRM.

I don't even buy books from Amazon at $9.99, I damn sure won't be buying them for $12.99, $14.99. There is way too much to read out there starting at $.99 and on up to $8ish. I figure I buy 10 to 15 eBooks a month and I have probably paid on average of about 6 or 7 dollars at most (its probably lower than that).
