I think, but can't prove, it's an Apple thing as Firefox runs fine on the other two machines I have. and crappy on this crappy iMac hardware. Or maybe an Intel thing, because the other two machines use AMD. I really don't know. And I doubt Microsoft even care that much about Linux or Apple as competition any more, they're more concerned (and rightly so) by Google If anything, I'd expect Chrome to suck - actually, it does suck compared to Opera. Man, what a revelation Opera has been. Fast, stable, good looking, has a lot of neat features built right in and completely standards compliant.

Firefox runs fine on my Mac - but I haven't got any plugins installed, so maybe it's a plugin thing?

See, Zelda - I'm not the only person who raves about how good Opera is

Minor rant - I do wish more people would code sites to work on all browsers, then I wouldn't have to use 3 of the sodding things.

And as an aside, have just run up all three browsers to see which uses the least resources - all have the same tabs open:

I doubt it's Intel vs AMD. I've used AMD CPUs in the past (though Intel at the moment), and never heard a word about stuff that ran on one and not the other.

You might want to look at Camino, the Mozilla project to make a specific version for the Mac.

MS is certainly anti-Linux - I just saw an article referring to an internal job posting at MS for people to work under regional directors in anti Linux/Open Office efforts. I can't see MS doing that if they didn't perceive some threat.

Opera isn't completely standards compliant, but no browser is. Opera does do as good a job as any.

I have an old friend who is a web developer who griped about the rise of Firefox. Before, he could just code to look okay in IE, and forget it. Now, he had to work harder.

I told him he had it backwards. He should code to look good in Firefox, than go back and handle all the special cases IE required because it wasn't standards compliant.

IE 8 is supposed to be the big standards compliance push. I suspect it's about as standards compliant as IE 7 was "secure", but don't use it and can't say from experience.

I don't have a Mac OS installed on the iMac anymore (Hated Snow Leopard, actually made the machine slower). I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10 installed on the iMac. It's Firefox on both installations that kills the system, makes it too slow to be used. As I have Firefox installed on other machines and in the same operating systems without problems on those other machines, the only logical conclusion is that it is something on the iMac hardware side / and or the drivers installed to run that hardware, which Firefox is clashing with.

I'm not too concerned anymore as I've now switched to Opera on all the systems and couldn't be happier (the only extension I had in Firefox was adblock, but I'm not missing that too much).

Take a look at Ad Blocking Filterset P. It's a set of CSS statements used in Ad Block. Essentially, it defines a large number of ad servers and simply doesn't render content served by them. I use it in FF instead of Ad Block. It does a sufficient job of straining out ads, and doesn't impose the overhead of actively scanning every page with JavaScript to look for ads to block.

I stopped using Adblock awhile back anyway on all but the most annoying of sites, because the sites I go to frequently I don't want to stop them from getting paid, like Reddit for instance. The sites I needed Adblock for, I stopped visiting altogether in recent weeks. Problem solved.

This is a general response, seeing as it's no longer applicable to you, Moejoe, but you (the general "you" ) can click on the pull-down menu at the Adblock icon and select "Disable on [current domain]" or "Disable on this page only". I think that's efficacious(*) for the purpose specified.

Cheers,
Marc

Oh yeah, it's definitely worthwhile to do that for the sites you don't want to block. But overall, I just couldn't be bothered any longer. I think I've actualy become 'adbllind' over the years.

Such sites get paid if you click on ads. I generally don't. (I do leave Google's text ads unblocked, though I could can them as well, as they at least try to be relevant to what I'm looking at.

And there are an assortment of sites which have ads that I do want to read, like news sites.

I'm not really interested in killing all ads: just in clening up ad heavy sites so I can read the content as well as the ads.

And using CSS to not render doesn't stop payment to a site that gets paid for the ad being viewed. Nothing on the ad server end is aware I'm not rendering them on my screen.

Your call.

It's Virgil Sams visiting Rigel in First Lensman. He inquires of his driver what the things are they are passing, and discovers they are advertising. The Rigelians have learned to ignore theirs the same way humans do.

I see occasional crashes of Firefox on Windows, but it always occurs on sites that are trying to load lots of images. I don't think it's an FF issue - I think it's a hardware problem on my desktop, and I have a flaky RAM stick. When FF hits that part of RAM...

It doesn't even crash, it just freezes the whole system, and I have to hit the reset switch to regain control.
