Scion, thanks for reporting your experience. I got an LA County library card and PIN number yesterday, got on some waiting lists. LA has 250-ish fiction titles and every one has at least one person waiting for it, and downloaded ADE. In theory, they will send me an e-mail when my download is available and I'll have a four day window to grab it. Then the maximum loan period is 21 days (default setting is 14 days).

The ADE instructions specify it should recognize our readers when plugged in and transfer books directly. We'll see if I have to jump the same hoops.

Many of the titles I'm interested in are waitlisted as well. I like the process your library has with the four day window upon notification of availability. Enjoy!

I have a question. I have been using overdrive to dl books for about 6 months now. I started with my local library in Jacksonville, Fl, and am now in New Mexico and got a card in Albuquerque, and have been dl'ng from there as well. I was thinking of getting a card from every state, (we are in an rv and traveling the country), but am now wondering if they are all on the same system, and share the same books. My question is, will I have access to more ebooks, with more library cards, or will that matter at all?

From everything I have read, and a lot of my own opinion:

Overdrive appears to have a lock on the Library market. The library contracts with Overdrive to provide the EBook / Audio book download. Overdrive owns the media, so I would expect the books would be the same wherever you go. The number of books you can download is limited per library, so I expect the more cards you have the more you can download. But how many can you read in two weeks anyway...

Different libraries will have different books, and even within one local area it may hold true. I am a member of three different local libraries and their overdrive selection is different. You can easily verify this yourself by looking at the main overdrive site and searching for a book there — you'll notice that different books appear in different libraries. Also, formats may be different — of the three libraries I've signed up with, one offers EPUB, Mobipocket & PDF, while the other two only offer two formats. PDF is offered by both, and one adds EPUB wjile the other adds Mobipocket.

I noticed today that the list of UK public libraries has grown! And although my local library (Norfolk) is still not on the list, the local government site has a 'spring 2010' date for the first loans, and a survey to list reading preferences. So when is it Spring? I have e-mailed the person in charge as well to make sure they know there is interest, and asked for a firm date!
(Can you tell I'm excited?)

Doug,
Where in NJ are you? I have a card in the Somerset County system, but I haven't used it for any eBooks yet. I did download some stuff from the NYPL, though, since they do have a great collection, and I have an old research card there from a few years back that apparently still works.

Also, where is this "list" that people are referring to? I feel like I've missed something.

Ah...thanks, desertgrandma!

Looks like my library isn't listed either. But they definitely have e-books available. The best solution would seem to be to check your local library if it doesn't appear on the list. I've just added my library to the list, though.

I live in Vegas which is part of the Clark County library system We have a large selection but don't seem to get newer titles very quickly.

I note that the District of Columbia Library has a large selection of ebooks ( about a thousand more than the Vegas library), More importantly, DC seems to offer non-resident cards for a fee. I have sent an email asking the price but have not heard back yet. I'm going to DC next week and will inquire at one of the branches.

I do not mean to gloat, honest
At home in Ottawa Canada we have a reasonable ebook section at the library. I'm retired so we winter in Phoenix AZ where I was able to get a library card.I now have a choice of two excellent locations for ebooks. I may never have to buy a book for a few years.
I love the way it works. I can download immediately or but one on reserve if it's out. I can put all the books I like in my Favorites List to download at a later date.
The best part is you know it can only get better

I sent my local library an email a couple of months ago about digital lending and got the following reply:

Quote:
Thank you for your enquiry. By now all British public library
authorities are considering or have introduced E-book loan systems. What
slows down the process is, of course, the lack of a standard format.
It's like VHS/Betamax/Philips again.
A swift look at the history of public libraries shows that they have
always been ahead of the private sector in new technology service
provision. Over the years we have supplied gramophone records,
photocopying, films, videotape, CD, DVD, on-line resources, Telex, fax,
computer access (usually free) and Internet services.
Which I thought was kinda promising. I sent them another email today saying that I was still eagerly awaiting implementation
