"Slate" seems to imply that you can actually write on it (without a 3rd party app).

put my 900 up on ebay, guess i'm a flighty bird at times with electronics...a portable color comic book reader is too tempting to pass up....i've tried the turn sideways netbook mode for reading and it just didn't work very well for me.

Now, I think I like iPad more than iSlate - after all, it close to the iPod.

I'm waiting for either dictionary firmware added to my Sony-700, enough cash for the 600 or 900, or for color eInk (whichever comes first!)

I answered the poll assuming it referred to a hypothetical PRS-900

No multi-tasking, how can you have an entertainment pad without that! Why does it not have a usb port? The price of $499 base unit will add up when you have to buy all kind of adapters for cameras and so forth. Plus, it's not a reader, it's just an oversize iPod Touch. It's not a netbook because it's to cripple (yeah, I can't believe it has no flash). So yeah it's more of an entertainment unit and I bought an ebook reader because I love to read so right now no iPad for me.

Because you are going to do 1 thing at a time:

Watch a movie or
Surf the Web or
Read a book
or Read your eMail or
...

About the only "multi-task" I think would be nice would be to listen to music while doing 1 other thing (not watching movie). Can you do that on an iPod? I expect you can. If so I would expect the iPad would allow for that too.

Found this:
Quote:
Remember way back to January 2007, when the iPhone was announced? Oh Internets, you wailed and gnashed your teeth endlessly. No 3G network? No MMS? No apps on the iPhone? No replaceable battery? Oh, your complaints were endless. You were sure that the iPhone was doomed because it didn’t meet all your requirements.

And what happened? Well, Apple has sold 40 million iPhones. FORTY MILLION. They have become the largest mobile device company in the world.

So today, you moan on and on about all the features you expected and demand in the iPad. What no Verizon? No two-way camera? It’s not weightless? A full half inch thick? Only 10 hours of battery life? You make tons of predictions on the success and failure with scant details and without ever actually trying one.
Details here

iPhone sales were apparently 57 million units over the first 24 months. This is a popular device, but Apple still has less than a 20% share of the smartphone market. Figures from here.

My point is not pro- or anti- iPhone or Apple, but simply that while they are significant they are not, at present, dominant in that market.

My view of the iPad, FWIW, is that it is an excellent user interface looking for applications. Whether it succeeds is, I think, a matter of whether people come up with compelling things to do with it.

As I've already mentioned, reading books is not, for me, an appropriate application for this device due to screen type and battery life. It might be great for something else - the photo sharing looked good, for example, but it's an expensive way of getting a glorified photo frame.

Yes, you can do that on an iPod and iPhone. You can play music behind anything except for phone and movies, so far as I have seen. Sadly (very sadly!) you can't put Pandora behind anything. Only Apple apps have the ability to be backgrounded.

Well, Apple apps pull a few tricks in order to background. The apps themselves don't background, they use daemons that are always running in the background (usually use very, very little RAM and sit completely idle unless told to do something). The iPod app for example, just sends commands to this daemon which does the actual playback. The OS can also talk to the daemon (so you can double-tap the home button for iPod controls, for example).

Ideally, Apple would open up a way to write a daemon for something like Pandora.

Interesting, I didn't know that about the daemons... but it makes sense.

Even if they don't... I'm sure the jailbreak team will be on this like white on rice.
