http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanitary_napkin note+pad is 2 real words. It doesn't have the same connotations as i+pad, which looks like Apple stuck the letter in front of a word to make a product name. | |

But if you look up "pad" in the dictionary: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/pad you'll see that it has innumerable meanings. I really don't see why people are going on about this one specific one out of the many. |

But has the name of the Wii harmed sales of it, do you think? Is there any reason to suppose that the name of the iPad will do?

"We" doesn't have the same hidden, unspoken, sexual humorous connotations as "pad."

Oh well, whatever. I think the name is just fine, personally. Each to their own.

The joke on the name is particularly American, in that the Stayfree Maxi-Pad is a fairly popular brand of Women's Sanitary Towel over there. This is why the twitter hashtag iTampon is the 2nd highest rated at the moment. Also, culturally, the iPad was a joke long before the actual device was made public, due to the MADTV sketch. So this is a double whammy. They picked a name with conscious knowledge of it already being a joke, and a name that they knew would provoke derision. Now, would you like me to explain the joke about the Englishman, Irishman and Scottish man walking into a bar, or any other joke for that matter, seeing as you sucked all the fun out of this thread already? I can do a full Freudian deconstruction on jokes and their relation to the subconscious if you like, I did write a few quite humourless papers on that topic after all. Apple are releasing iModerator next. What it does is suck all the fun out of everything you visit on the web. |

I too was confused about why so many people found the name rather funny. iPad sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Then I read an article explaining how many american's immediately think "sanitary towel" when hearing it, just as Moejoe explained.

I think for the joke to work, we have be quite sniggery about the article the device is associated with. We wouldn't find i-nailpolish or i-pairoftights as amusing, but there's something about sanitary towels we still find subversive and unsettling - not to be mentioned in polite society. Glass of Cockburn Port anyone? |

One advertiser once said there was no such thing as bad advertising. I wonder....Did Apple go with the name as a form of viral advertising? Look at all the people talking about the product name..... |

I'm sure that aspect of it was discussed in the marketing meetings.
