No need to debate this. If people say they aren't comfortable reading on a backlit screen, I believe them. (It doesn't bother me, but everyone's different.)

If I don't have to, why would I do more? Also, I take regular breaks, eye exercises to ease strain and so on... with a e-ink screen, I don't need to take nearly as many breaks or use the exercises.

Yep, to each their own.

I just hate it when some go to far in expressing their opinion with hyperbole like "If it glows, it blows" or saying any device with a back lit screen can't be an e-reader etc.

Everyone has different needs, different eyes, different preference. No need for people to be so strong in their opinions, try to speak for everyone etc.

Equally, people have to acknowledge that there's a significant market segment who really DO want a non-backlit screen...

Yep. The to each their own goes both ways.

Tablet people need to quit talking about the death of e-ink and other non-backlit displays.

As long as there's a niche that wants them, someone will make them to make money off that niche.

Question Already owned epub books transferable to Ipad?

Hi

Sorry if this has already been answered, but I skipped pages after I had read through the first 20 pages of commentary.

So to the question (which is really a make or break point for me):

Apparently iBooks is only available in the US, but since Ipad supports epub it should be possible for us Europeans to purchase books through existing stores such as Waterstones (which I use for my Sony Reader). It is also possible to download huge amounts of books in the epub format, or transfer other formats to epub using Calibre etc.

So my basic question:
Will it be possible to transfer epub files to the iPad (either via wifi, bluetooth or usb-cable etc. or only via their 'iBooks'?

Right now I do have the possibility to transfer my DRM-free MP3 collection to my ipod without having to use itunes-purchased songs, but I am wondering if there will be similar liberties with the iLibrary. If not you would have to purchase all ebooks from ibooks, which in turn would mean: No ebook-functionality for Europeans, or if at some point the app becomes available we only get a crappy selection due to limited deals with European publishers (a selection which might be better at Waterstones and similar stores).

Anyone know about this or are we all just speculating?

in advance.

Stop right there.

a. No, it's not as far as we know at present. iBooks DRM is incompatible with ADEPT-DRM'ed ePub's (everyone else).
b. Yes, it may be. IF, and this is currently unknown, they allow other people's reader apps on the iPad then this will work.

So...insufficient data, come back later.

there is nothing to say that iBook doesn't accept other DRM formats either. all we know is that apple sells only their DRM format.

there is also no reason to believe that apple will shut out 3rd party ebook readers as kobo has already said their application is ready to go on the ipad. so i'd say you're going to be able to read pretty much any format you can get an application for.

I think that note taking functionality is just a matter of programming for the soft keyboard.
Typed is an extremely long way from being viable for classes involving non-ascii characters and diagrams. Every student has to take at least *some* classes like that in the US. I don't know how it is in humanities subjects, but in Maths classes, I've not had a single student who types their notes.

There's also the issue of whether these onscreen keyboards are responsive enough to cope with high speed touchtyping and, even if they are, whether that's sufficiently comfortable. I have my doubts.

Quite a few hours, but the point is, past a certain threshhold I'm almost guaranteed a headache.

I've never had the same problem with my kindle.

All speculation at this point, but if they allow Stanza (an existing iPhone app) to run, you'd be able to transfer epub files to it easily via wifi using Calibre. See the Calibre forum here at Mobileread for more information.

I can't imagine trying to keep up in math class taking notes on a keyboard. I don't even want to try handwriting recognition for that. I'd rather take ink notes (which I can do on my iPod Touch using FastFinga, but a larger screen would be nice....)

It's such a pleasure to type on capacitive displays, that's for sure.

Never considered that. Might be worth trying.
