your post is very helpful but you miss a very important thing: a review of the irex 800s that you seems just buy.. I'm very interested in that device, but I can't find online one single hands-on review.. and cause I have not so much money like you ![]() so please tell us something about this device, considering your great experience with e-ink.. |

mgmueller,
I would have two other questions for you if you don't mind! I really have to buy my first reader really soon. I'll go with either an iRex iLiad or an iRex 800. It will be exclusively used for complex PDFs. - I guess the best would be to know if PDF zooming will one day exist on the 800, but for now I think we can't know for sure. Other than that, can you compare both readers? Why do you prefere the 800 to the iLiad? - What is the difference between the original iLiad and the iLiad Book Edition? Is it only wifi? Because I don't need wifi at all. Other than that, are they exactly the same? Can I use all the "homebrew" applications in both of them? Thanks a lot in advance, you're very kind to provide such help on mobileread.com! |

A more appropriate question is the iLiad still being sold as it been listed out of stock on iRexs site for ages though it may be in stock in various on line retailers.
As for the zooming, it looks like iRex deliberately disabled it as a product differentiator between the consumer 800 and the professional 1000. If there is a enough bitching done about this they might change their minds. Like you I want to buy my first reader but I having been waiting for some time and the way things are going I will be waiting till april for the Asus DR-950, the Onyx boox 80 or the final iRex firmware. |

I could also buy an used regular iLiad, but if the difference is only wifi, I really don't care. Quote:

There aren't any firmware updates anymore, which conveniently had been uploaded via WiFi. And there's no bookstore or anything else. You can install a 3rd party browser or the downloader for daily comics. But that's of no real importance in my opinion. Meaning: In my opinion you can save the money and go for the WiFi-less book edition. Last edited by mgmueller; 01-28-2010 at 04:38 PM. |

Others have mentioned the Onyx, which I don't owe. Implementation of zoom into iRex 800 seems complex and far from being sure. I wouldn't rely on it. Always buy these gadgets based on the features they already have. Never based on assumptions what they might have some day. |

iRex 800 is growing on me, really like it already. But iLiad, as my very first reader, always will have a "special place" among my gadgets. Having to decide for a new unit, I'd most likely go for iRex 800 over iRex iLiad. It's the new unit, highly supported, a bit cheaper. For me, the question is different: "Which unit to take on a trip". And here iLiad still ranks very high, definitely in my top 5 (maybe even top 3). Last edited by mgmueller; 01-28-2010 at 05:04 PM. |

They seem to have some (even still iLiads) on stock. Some unboxed even for special prices. As far as I know, the owner even is a member of this forum (Tribble, if I remember correctly). There are other German bookstores, selling them for the very same prices as iRex themselves. If Germany from a logistics and price perspective makes sense for you, I easily can point you to some of those German websites. Last edited by mgmueller; 01-28-2010 at 04:55 PM. |

Sadly, justread.de list their iLiad Book Edition at 549,00 EUR (US 766$) a lot more than the iRex shop (US 499$). |

![]() Usually, you can take $:€ as 1:1. So for you it's way too expensive of course. Did you check the fleamarket here on mobileread already? There's an unboxed iLiad on justread.de http://www.justread.de/shop/product_...packung--.html for € 549. They've got that for quite a while now. Maybe you can send them an email asking about a special price? Worth trying... Last edited by mgmueller; 01-28-2010 at 05:30 PM. |
