Except the book publishers would be equally happy with ADEPT-protected files. Hence the propitiatory DRM is Apple's choice. Which shows... (yea, I was right. Go figure)

Wait until a Kindle or Sony owner decides to move to the iPad and then finds out their books won't work on their new device. Especially the Sony owner who would already own ePubs.

If Apple allows other reading apps on the iPad I'm sure they will be crippled. And that's a major if.

I am very curious about this as well. I would have said they would 'not dare' cripple the kindle reader app - but Woz has been gone a long time. Apple is all about control now - they have shown this with iphone apps.

IMO, the publishers will also demand that the Kindle app be excluded because they do not care for Amazon pricing bestsellers at $9.99.

I keep forgetting Americans are on here too so I need to make my sarcasm much clearer!

SDK is out now so all stanza or other need to do is update resolution and submit for iPad, we should know pretty quickly.

ok. let's see. Apple can license Adobe's DRM, sharing some of their profits with Adobe and be forever in their control.

or

Apple can use their already existing DRM, keep their profits and keep their own control.

kind of a no-brainer isn't it? i doubt the book publishers care who's DRM is used as long as some form of DRM is used. so why would Apple go with ADEPT?

Yep, it's an absolute no-brainer if you want tight control over providing a customer-friendly experience.

It's also a very good reason for a customer to avoid the iPad, of course. Whereas if they'd gone with ADEPT, it becomes a plain plus point instead of a huge thumbs down.

Apple is not using Adobe's ADEPT encryption which the Sony and many other ebook providers use (not B&N, they use their own encryption scheme on their ePubs). Apple would need to license ADEPT in order for your Sony ePubs to work. Of course, unencrypted and disinfected ePubs should work in iBooks as long as iBooks works like the rest of iTunes.

I'll buy the device if the kindle reader works, if not, so be it, I'll stick with my kindle and buy my wife another.

Although it took a while, they did eventually get rid of DRM on audio purchases. So it's not inconceivable that DRM might go away for books as well. In any case, DRM is generally pretty easy to get around. It won't be very long (I predict about a week or two) before the iPad is jailbroken, and it may take a month or so before Apple's DRM is cracked. So if it's important to you to be able to de-DRM your book purchases, you'll likely be able to in short order.

Apple is not using adept on the books they SELL.

how do you know what their system can read? how do you know stanza, or adobe wont launch an app that lets you authorise the device to read adept Epub?

Apple controls which apps can run on its devices, and they traditionally don't allow competition with their own revenue streams. So if they act as they have in the past, all ebook apps will likely be banned from their app store.

Apple has a history of not allowing apps that compete with their core processes. No choice of internet browsers. No competing media players. No Skype. If Apple allows readers with competing stores I would be shocked. There's more of a chance that Apple may allow readers not connected to a store. But, IMO, just like in present day iTunes you will be required to load your books into iTunes and the books as long as there is no non-Apple DRM would be converted to ePub and then be available through the iBooks tab to load onto the iPad.

The only facts I have is that Apple is using their own DRM not Adobe's and Apple's history of disallowing competing apps.

Since you are a Sony owner, it would be prudent to wait and see what can be done with your current books.
