I certainly don't see myself replacing my reader with an iPad, but I am strongly considering replacing my netboook with a 3G iPad. I've tried to be a person that uses a one device fits all, but that doesn't work for me. As long as I can type/make notes at a reasonable speed, then every feature that I was looking for in my netbook will be better met by this new gadget.

Device: Sony PRS-900 but selling to move to and Ipad
|
Honestly, it's shiny and all and I thought it might be worthwhile, but I have an iPhone, and iPod Classic (120GB) and a PRS-900. It fulfils all their functions in part, but not well enough to replace any of them.
iPhone- It's not small enough to carry in a pocket, so it loses the portable aspect, but gains screen size and processing power. Plus, there's no way I'm getting rid of the iPhone. (Unless AT&T decides to start failing more than ever, or the signal is screwy when I move. That's the ONLY reason I would get one of these things.) iPod- It doesn't have the capacity that I need. End of story. There's just not enough storage on any of these models, plus the fact that it's format gimped for movies makes it an almost total non-starter as movie viewer. I could stick a few playlists and shows on it for when I'm reading or bored or whatever. PRS-900- The screen difference really isn't *that* bad. I spend most of my time on my computer so that wouldn't change much. The problem is that LCD makes it a bit harder to focus on what I'm reading. And anyway I don't *want* a multitasking reader. I want it to do one thing, and do it well. That's personal preference, but I know I would get distracted by all the other stuff. I just want to read. That's it. That's my take on the whole thing. I was thinking about getting one if it was closer to a computer and actually could do some heavier duty tasks. But honestly it doesn't have a place in my bag currently because it fills no niche that I need filled. I'm pretty good with the setup I have, I don't need this. If I needed a more portable computer, I'd trade my MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air. My main computer is a Mac Pro, so it's not like I would need a portable beast, just something to handle road tasks and maybe a little podcast recording. |

I bought a Reader because:
- ergonomically, it works like a book (how it feels, where you use it) - the screen is comfortable for reading whole books on - the battery won't give out half way through! I don't see the iPad addressing any of these key points. I've looked into reading ebooks off and on over 25 years of using various computers large and small, and the Reader is the first device that I've had that is actually comfortable to read on. So, I'm in the "not even remotely" camp! |

I'll probably buy one when it's released in the UK, but as a portable video player, not as a reader.

Nope - why ?
Well I only have the PRS 300 but it fits in my pocket and has superb reading screen. The reading quality is the unique selling point to me. I have top dollar PC screen and it kills my eyes for reading long periods - whereas the PRS 300 is like reading a book. No strain. Period. That is enough to sell it to me. I also chose the 300 as this whole area is fast changing and very embryonic. In 18 months time it will be so much cheaper better faster etc. So I'm not going to invest too heavily up front. Re the Ipad - it is so huge. For me a computer and an ereader covers a lot of bases.

iPad surely is a great gadget, but a different niche. I've tested a tablet PC (with outdoor display) 3 years ago. Phantastic, but not very useful. For 1500 Euros, functionality simply was too limited, compated to standard laptops. But now, for $ 500 to $ 800, it's a different situation. Still very limited capabilities. But for this price range, just surfing the web and sometimes checking a PowerPoint presentation is okay. |

Selling my PRS600? No!
Buying an iPad in addition to my reader? Probably... But, I think I'll wait until next year because: - by then, the prices will be lower - all potential problems will be discovered and fixed - for sure next year's model will have additional features (knowing how Apple works, this is expected) So, for now I'll stick with the PRS600 and I'll see what next year brings. |

Not I. For a 10 inch screen I just use my Asus netbook and put it in Portrait mode. It works just fine and I have a fully functional Windows 7 device right there. I think that the Ipad will appeal to Iphone users, not ebook readers. I can, however, see wide commercial adoption of the Ipad for restaurants, wine stores, hospitals, etc. Any place with people walking around needed to sort and organize lots of data, inventory, et al will find the device a great aid.

Nope. I got my 900 for reading, sure I could get the iPad for reading and replace it but that is about all I'd use it for. If it were more of a computer, then maybe I'd consider replacing my laptop. Right now though the iPad is more a sleek, shiny, cool looking portable entertainment device. I am tempted to get one just for the geek factor, but in all honesty the kids would get more use out of it than I would, and even for them it would pretty quickly lose its appeal.
I went through the same thing once when my wife told me if I really wanted an iPod touch I should get, we were in Best Buy at the time too. I'm so proud of myself, I talked myself out of it. Just like I'm doing with iPad now. |

I'm not seeing how this could replace my reader. I use EInk displays because I sit in front of a computer for 12+ hours a day. My blue eyes just can't handle it, I get terrible headaches. I have no need for an LCD 'tablet', which is nothing more than a majorly crippled netbook. No multi-tasking? No flash?
If Sony released this, it would sell terribly. But since Apple did, everyone will eat it up. The specs are beyond horrible. It's nothing more than an iTouch. If it ran Snow Leopard (and though some EFI fun allowed us to run Linux), I would give it a thought. As it sits? I'll pass. The new tablet HP released is much more useable. |
