Just downloaded the Newspaper and it worked fine. No need for a paid subscription as far as I can tell.
I did just have weird thing happen though. The display of my books on the home screen disappeared after I'd sent the Newspaper (calibre) to the 900. I went through the shutdown and restart to get them to show back up but now they are in some strange order it seems. |

That is strange. I just sent The Houston Chronicle and as the previous times calibre recognized the 900 and sent the paper. At the same time. Sony Reader opened. After calibre finished I used Reader to eject. When the screen change from do not disconnect to usb connected I unplugged. It took a few moments for the 900 to sort it all out but when the home page reappeared everything was as it should be. I have my books set to sort by date and they were like that on both the home page and the book list.

My "books" display disappeared again - this is very annoying..
EDIT: After a bit of experimentation. It seems this "disapperance" of books from the menu has specifically to do with the fact that Calibre puts a "News" folder in place with it's downloaded items - newspapers, magazines, web feeds, etc. If I rename the folder my books are displayed in the Home menu but if the "News" folder is there the display under Books is blank or it displays that folders contents. This is totally weird. I renamed the folder back to "News" and I still had my books displayed, but when I cleared it (via mounted drive all this renaming) and re-sent it via calibre (such that it re-created a "News" folder) now my Books main display is blank again. It clearly has something to do with that folder and/or calibre's sending/creation of it. Last edited by kennyc; 01-26-2010 at 07:26 AM. |

Really strange Kenny. I just d/l today's Houston Chronicle. I still have yesterday's in calibre. With calibre open I plugged the 900 in. calibre detected it and sent both copies of the Chronicle. I looked at the screen on the 900 and it still had the do not disconnect icon. I looked at the task bar and Reader was open. I went to Reader and ejected the 900. When it changed to USB Connected I unplugged it. When it got through sorting or whatever and the home page reappeared the only difference was the Chronicle is there along with the latest 2 books. I noticed I had an extra collection so I checked collections and sure enough, I now have a news collection.
I wonder if it might be something in the recipe? I know USA Today works correctly on mine so you might try the Houston Chronicle and USA Today. If they don't work, the old man is out of ideas. |

It very possibly could be the recipe and/or file it creates for some reason. I'm still a bit confused as to exactly when it happens cause I went through the same sequence a couple of times and it seemed to be a problem when the Denver Post was the first or only file in the News Folder......
Very weird stuff. |

The 3 books listed under the books section on the home screen displays the 3 most recently added books (there are ways to manipulate this list too).
If the Sony is choking on the first page of these, it could explain some of the behavior. They need changes to the internal layout of the ePub before they will show up as publications. Sony uses some extra metadata an an atom feed to drive some of the special logic. Out of random curiosity, are you a Mac user? If so, it might be interesting to give you a build of my tool and see how well that works for you. |
