I just got back from watching 'Avatar' 3D - and I share the opinions of those who say the story is pretty weak (to put it mildly).
Some of the 3D effects were impressive; but others were less so. Many scenes just looked like layers of flats - and the patchiness of the effects (and weak story) stopped me getting immersed in the world of the film. And, boy was it long! I left just before the end, partly because I was bored, and partly because I was scared it would descend into the sort of mawkish mush which ends a lot of similar films. 3D has potential, but I won't be going to another 3D film any time soon. I'd still rather watch DVDs at home - it's a more pleasant viewing experience than attending my local flea pit. On the recommendations front, one fabulous film I watched recently was the 1931 version of 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' - stunning! Last edited by Sparrow; 01-18-2010 at 11:53 AM. |

Hmm... I didn't find Avatar's CGI "jarring," and I'm not sure what you mean by the "silver sheen." Certainly CGI is still not perfect when mixed with live action, and I had no problem distinguishing one from the other, but I had no trouble suspending my disbelief and just enjoying the ride (which may explain why I didn't notice a "silver sheen"). In the same way, I can enjoy purely CGI movies like The Incredibles, or a more character-driven story like Solaris or Minority Report. Obviously, if you're not into SF or fantasy, these won't work for you no matter how they're made.

On the other hand I LOVE action adventure, scifi, *most* fantasy and will go to these movies. when ALIENS came out I was still an active duty Army She Beast and wanted to grow up to be just like Ripley! Quote:
I wonder how many people thought the colors in the Wizard of Oz were too garrish and would distract from the enjoyment of the film? Last edited by Verencat; 01-18-2010 at 07:47 PM. Reason: fixed quote tags |

Saw IT'S COMPLICATED this weekend, mostly because Streep is always awesome - and found it surprisingly funny. The audience laughed more during this film than I've heard in a long time. I give Alec Baldwin a lot of credit for doing the nude scenes, and Streep makes a great stoner!

Back to recommendations and this is one I love with a passion bordering on insanity - John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China. |

Saw two good ones this weekend...
"The Hurt Locker"...A well done war film with very little, if any, political angle... And, "Moon"...Which is a a very nice little sci-fi... No huge FX...just a nice story done on an independent budget... Now "Big Trouble in Little China" is a film I've never been able to finish and have no clue why people like it. Probably the one John Carpenter film I just cannot stand... |

I have these two lined up for this week (re-watches)
Jeux Interdits, directed by René Clément Harrowing tale of two children and the horrors of war. The Ice Storm, directed by Ang Lee Brilliant, evocataive movie based upon a so-so novel. The scene on the bicycle (although only short and without any words) has inspired more than one of my stories. Also this week: The Bad Sleep Well, Directed by Akira Kurosowa Tokyo Story, Directed by Yasujiro Ozu The Bicycle Thieves, Directed by Vitorria De Sica Z, Directed by Costa Gavras |

QUESTION: Is there a Divine Comedy movie?
Has anyone ever made a movie of Dante's Divine Comedy? It seems tailor-made for today's technology. Although I could never see it attaining mass appeal if they retained all the poetry of the original, the book could easily, IMHO, be converted into a winning screenplay.

I watched Sherlock Holmes yesterday, and I'm torn: part of me likes the filme because of a fresh new look on Holmes and Watson. Yet another part of me finds the story absurd and far-fetched.
What do youse thing? |

Well, arglebargle. I've carefully avoided exposing my taste(s) in film in this thread as long as I can. A sampling of things most of you most likely have never seen (in no particular order)
Ten Canoes: Hwal/The Bow: Naisu no Mori (don't worry-- the movie makes total sense with subtitles!) Cha no aji/The Taste of Tea The REAL "My Sassy Girl"-- not the Elisha Cuthbert pool of diarrhea: Something lighter and more action-packed? Okay, how about Jene Reno and Natalie Portman in Leon (the real "Leon" cut, not the hacked-up "The Professional" one) or Jene Reno and Steven Seagal's daughter (yes, that's Stephen Seagal's daughter) in Wasabi or a creature feature in Gwoemul/The Host or maybe this |
