When I authorized my Mom's 600, all i did was...

1. Install eBook Library (came on the 600)
2. Create an account at Adobe.com
3. Download and install ADE
4. Activate ADE
5. With ADE running, I plugged in the 600 via the USB cable
6. Activate the 600
7. Done!

All good advice.

However, if you already HAD a previous Sony Reader, then you MAY already have the current version of the Sony Library software, and installing it from a CD will not be necessary.

Open your software and check on UPDATES to see if you have the current version.

In the UK you need to download Adobe DE on top of the library software, for some reason. Download Adobe DE, open that program and register your Reader with that. Then you should be good to go. I'm not sure of the exact process, since I'm in the US.

So don't buy a particular piece of hardware because you can't get someone's 2nd party software to work on it? I guess we shouldn't buy any computers too.

When some people have said they have solved the problem, sometimes the problem turned out to be other poorly written software causing the problem.

No, I think you've got this wrong. In the UK, ADE is required to buy books. The only place this seems to be explained is the WH Smith ebook site. I couldn't get this to work at all on my Mac and used a PC to authorise correctly with ADE.

Appears to be much easier in the US with the Sony store.

This sounded strange enough that I went to the WH Smith Ebook site and checked out their help files. Don't make the mistake of assuming they are right in what they say. They speak of Adobe EPub as if it were an Adobe standard. It is not. You need ADE to purchase and download DRM protected books, but it is never needed to purchase books that are not DRM protected. WH Smith may only sell DRM protected books - I don't know.
