If touch screen is not the culprit, then who is to be blamed that most of eInk based readers runs for 10-14 days without recharge and iRex products no more than...many hours? like 10-12h? even with a full showdown between reading sessions?

Just had a thought. Perhaps Irex has a glut of 1000s they would like to sell, so they didn't put the same features(folders etc) in the DR800 because they were concerned it would take sales away from the 1000. So they are positioning the 800 as sort of the "DR1000 Lite", a compromise for people who will sacrifice having some of the "features" for a better price.

I can see the thought process this way - I still don't agree with it

I never switch off my iLiad. Lacking standby, startup time would be to annoying for me. I've never experienced the 10 to 12 hours you mention. It's definitely a few days. On the other hand, I never could make 2 weeks with my Sony 505 or other readers.

You can read on your iLiad for 20 hours non-stop?

Well, I don't actually read more than 6 or 8 hours in a single instance of course. But I permanently keep it on - for days.

And permanently keeping it on is the same power consumption as actually reading?

You've been too fast, just edited my post. I'm reading about 6 to 8 hours in a single instance. In total, over some days, I'll probably do about 15 to 20 hours before recharging.
The only difference I see between my various units: Sony I simply put into standby and can restart it after weeks. iLiad I leave on and after some weeks (reading or not) the battery is drained.

Maybe they improved it?

I have done some research one year ago when I considered buying iRex iLiad v2, and general consensus was that you can read 10-12 hours maximum before recharging.

I would have expected such durations for v1.

I don't think we can yet draw conclusions on battery consumption in the 800. We'll need to let more people get some time with it in real world usage and after indexing is completed (provided it is actually doing background indexing).

This particular post was a reply to yours

testing that has been done to the previous versions of iLiad. They had only 10-12 hours of reading time and I am curious what part of it to be blamed if not the touch screen.

Kindle DX only has rudimentary PDF support. You can open it - that's pretty much it. No zoom, no font sizes. You can rotate the screen as sole optimisation.

iRex iLiad has, in my opinion, the best zoom functionality (iRex 1000S as well, but given the huge screen you barely need it there).
iRex 800 does reflow instead. Nothing too special, most others can do this as well.

For Kindle DX, PDF would NOT be my first choice, Amazon's native .azw by far delivers better results.
