That's not entirely correct. The QC2s, which I have, "surround" the ears; that's the type of headphones that I like personally. The newer (and more expensive) QC3s are the smaller ones which sit "on" the ear.

I noticed this also when first using my original Bose headset but apparently have gotten used to it now. I think part of the reason, in my office, is that I was not aware of how much background white noise was there & it is disorienting when removing the headset.

I could actually hear her better with the headset & it turned on than when I removed it. The headset cancelled the engine noise but allowed me to hear her speech.

Another thing, the active noise cancelling only works for repetitive noise like sinusoidal noise. This may be what was really being tested in the test that TadW mentioned. The Bose doesn't seem any better in listening sound quality that most other good headsets I've used.

I don't think it was the lack of background noise that was doing it to me -- the unit I have (somewhere) had a 'volume' control on the canceling effect, and the strength of whatever I was experiencing was directly proportional to how much I turned the 'volume' of the 'silence' up.

Bose certainly do things in "style". In the carrying case of the QC2 headphones they even give you a stack of "business cards" to distribute to people who are impressed by the headphones

. I must say that everyone I've ever demonstrated them to has been completely "blown away" by them. Not cheap, but they work very well.
