Thanks all, have downloaded most of your suggestions (if there were multiple books from one author, I started off with one).

If you don't see me around here for a few days, I'll be busy reading :P

Well, the husband stole my reader. I guess it's my own fault, I was telling him how much I enjoyed reading 1632 by Eric Flint so as soon as I finished it and thought to get my teeth in some Sherlock Holmes, he appropriated my device. See, I really do need another device

As soon as you have your second reader you can follow up with 1633 and 1634* from http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/

I second both suggestions. Especially if you long to immerse yourself in long stories. I enjoyed both very much.

Right now, I'm really enjoying Charlie Chan.

I recommend the Jacques Futrelle omnibus. The Problem of Cell 13 is a great locked room story and the other ones feature the same detective character.

Or another husband, tough choice really.

I've read or attempted to read most of the selections mentioned on the first page and I heartily second all of them. Some of them are a bit more challenging than light reading, I am still working my way through the D'Artagnan series. I somehow missed the Raffles Omnibus so I'll be joining you with those, thanks dreams.

I'll suggest you pick some at random, read the blurb and try one or two that sound like they might be interesting. I do this regularly, sometimes with a pleasant surprise, sometimes with dismal results but always interesting.

Enjoy!

(Just to round out the whole Holmesian/Raffles thing you might enjoy R. Holmes & Co. by John Kendrick Bangs available here in LRF format or available at Project Gutenburg http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/20559 in several other formats)

One moment you are looking for something to read, the next you're busy with other things and barely get around to reading. Also, I made friends with my local library and read a few paper books (gasp!).

Anyway, have now started on the MR books and picked Jane Austen's Emma first (no particular reason). I'm about a quarter of the way in and not sure I can finish it. Have you guys read it?

I can't find much to like in the book, I think Emma's a bitch, her father is a hypochondriac and a Nervous Nelly and everybody panders to him, and they seem to have nothing to talk about but do it for hours. I'm just about ready to tear my hair out. Please tell me Emma will get her comeuppance and there's a reason for me to keep reading!

Yes, her father is a hypochondriac. But he's also a gentleman -he has an income from land and doesn't work. i.e. he's rich.

Emma is certainly not necessarily likable at first. and she certainly gets her comeuppance from Mr Elton at the end of chapter 15 - which you should be getting near.

I like all Austen's novels, but they may be a little slow for you - the action is an action of words and manners, rather than of deeds.

I again urge my "David Balfour" on you. You should find action enough in that.

You mean when mr Elton declares his love for Emma rather than Harriet? Yeah, I just read that this morning. It's not the lack of action that bothers me, I rather like the change of pace, but the characters really annoy me. And I don't think Mr Woodhouse is a gentleman - he's rich and obnoxious in my book

I'm not going to be downloading anything for a little while with my new rule (can only download one ebook for every two ebooks read - thanks for the idea pdurrant!), and I have a few books on smashwords up next. But when I do, I'm going for some Wilkie Collins. Any suggestions on which one I should read first?
