I guess you are really just calling for more of your favorite genres becoming available for free, but be aware that the comments read more like a slap at genres that you personally don't care for. I've seen at least one other recent post that offered a rather unflattering opinion of Christian-themed books. The problem is that such opinions can insult those who do enjoy the genre. I doubt that is anyone's intent, but I suggest we be careful in being strongly critical of any genre so as to not hit unintended targets with the darts we throw.

sure it was a slap at those genres and I'm not even a bit contrite at having made it. if there were continual gluts of Harlequin's SciFi, Cozies and so on there would be other unhappy customers

Well.....it's a pretty broad definition of customer to include wanting something for free (and I'm right in the same group with you). My point was only that other users who don't share your taste may be offended by strong negative comments. I think this is particularly true when it involves religious beliefs.

Contrition isn't necessary or suggested, but it won't hurt any of us to recognize that freedom to choose means others will choose that which we do not. Diversity in tastes is part of what makes the world interesting. Anyway, I've made my point and I'm not trying to turn this into a rant - just hoping we all try to avoid unintentional jabs at our fellow Kindlers.

I didn't really see a "strong" negative comment anywhere, merely an expression of frustration at the lack of variety which I happen to share.

Personally, I am offended by YOUR comment that implies people should feel obligated to withhold their opinion because it may offend someone else.

By all means, defend your genres, provide a counter argument, ask her to explain her opinions, attempt to change her mind, or just plain rant about it... but don't suggest she should just shut up and keep her opinions to herself, no matter how you choose to use language to do it.

In any event, I think that all of this belongs in another forum, not in this amazingly long-lived, long-loved and on-topic thread, so I won't be responding again here.

A free book is not really free if it's a book I won't be reading.

ok, I am complaining about the lack of diversity. and slow down and go back at what I said... NOT just religious, but the books growing out of gamers alter ego lives or however they put them together. I am after all, and equal oppourtunity bitch

Well, I am interested enough to download the free books. But, if they aren't good writing, I'll be quick to delete them!

I don't object to complaints about lack of variety. But that's up to the publishers, of course. And perhaps the other publishers are still recouping from Christmas season. Or something!

Anyway - thanks for drawing our attention to ANY free books. I don't take them all, and KindleKitten is free to have a different choice from my subset.

Well now, that's pretty ironic, given what the intent of my post was. Not a very accurate summary of what I said either - no one was told 'shut up and keep opinions to themselves'. Rather, I suggested that some might take inadvertent offense with the context of that post and another (that was quite a bit harsher). But I do appreciate being defended to the death for my right to say it...

Look, the issue is one of sensitivity, not of censorship. It is silly to imply there is an ongoing debate about genres going on, because I've missed it if there has. I noted a couple of digs directed at books with Christian themes and tried to point out that those comments may be offensive to some folks who happen to share those religious beliefs. Nothing more or less was intended in pointing this out.

Now if my view is not shared or if others simply doesn't care, I guess it's simple enough to ignore the suggestion - which is what it was - and post anything you want. I don't see where thinking of others before posting is a bad thing (and note that does not mean don't post at all), but I never intended for this to become a distraction to the intent of the forum.

Kindlekitten, I'll say again that I'm sure you had no intent of offending anyone, and I would not suggest that you should not post anything. I certainly would not tell you or anyone else to shut up. You are a very active part of this Kindle community and that is appreciated by all. Personally I hope lots of freebies of the genres that you desire come your way, along with continuing all those that are available now for those who want them. The more the merrier, variety is the spice of life, and all that.
