I got a used Kindle..

It's DX, seems to be in working order and what not, but I can't figure out how to de-register the previous owner. I guess my Kindle needs to be connected to the internet, but I don't have wireless (obviously if I absolutely have to I can go somewhere else).. What to do? Also, if I deregister the previous owner, will they lose their books and subscriptions, or will those transfer to their new Kindle? And lastly, how do I get rid of all their stuff on the Kindle? Like archived periodicals, for example.

Thanks!

Any content directly on your new (used) kindle will remain until you delete them. The previous owner will be able to keep the content that was archived. I am surprised that they did not deregister it for you since it gives you access to their account, and my guess is that is actually is deregistered and won't show that until you try to buy something.
Once you go online, and yes you can do it with the usb cord and your computer, and register the new Kindle you will be able to keep and store your own content. In order to delete the stuff already on your Kindle, you will have to do it line by line and it will say either delete or remove from device. Someone else may be able to tell you how to do it with a complete wipe.

The short answer is that the previous owner should have de-registered it before selling it to you. He or she can still do that, but they have to do it via the Manage Your Kindle page on the Amazon site.

Once they've done that, you can register it to yourself on the Manage Your Kindle page (given that you don't have wireless access).

However, the Kindle will still show that it's not registered. Regardless of what you do on the website, if you don't have wireless access, the Kindle will have no way of knowing what its registration status is.

But that probably doesn't matter. You'll still be able to buy books and load them onto the Kindle via USB.

Would it be possible to connect the kindle using the USB cable to a computer and delete all the contents of the documents folder on it?

if the seller does not respond to a request to deregister it - just start buying a bunch of books and I guarantee the dx will be deregistered in no time
