It was very good. But the remaining two books in the series aren't available at fictionwise, so now I have an Amazon.com wishlist too. Also silly ebook RRPs ($26 or so), reduced to under $8 at Amazon.

It took a little while to get into it as the setting is rather odd, but also familiar. By the end I was definitely wanting to read the other two - but they'll have to wait. A very interesting take on gods and greek myths, in the modern day.

Back to Charlaine Harris for my next - the second in her Southern Vampire series, Living Dead in Dallas. I enjoyed the first one.

I have finally started the first Stieg Larsson (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and already have trouble putting it down. Nearly burnt dinner tonite. Can't wait to get back to the book. Has been a while that a book grabbed me so fast

The Diving Pool by Yoko Ogawa... There's a calm claustrophobia about her work that I find perversely pleasant. This is the fourth book of hers I read, after The Professor and the Housekeeper (also in english), and Hotel Iris and Smell of Ice (in greek). I found The Professor and the Housekeeper heartwarming, but I'm guessing it was a side effect - none of the other books are.

I just finished The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs. I wanted to like this book, but a lot of the parts that were supposed to be tearjerkers just left me cold. It seemed like the author was trying too hard, and was doing more telling than showing. It wasn't bad, it just seemed like it could have used some more judicious editing.

Good question Kenny - was barely 40 pages into the book. Must be the way the character were described. And the way the book is structure, by starting with a mystery and then jumping to another story line. Usually, this annoys me but in this case I couldn't wait to find out how they are linked.

I find the book is easy to read with very interesting characters that are just not slick but seem to be right out of life. The way I read the descriptions of them, they could be living nearby and I could meet them. No superheros so far - just normal humans.

And I enjoyed the second one even more. I'm now rather pleased I bought the first eight when they were on 100% micropay rebate. (I bought the first four and used the rebate to buy the next four.) But I suspect they'll be better spaced out with other books in-between.

So now for David Drake's In The Stormy Red Sky. This is the most recent book in his series about Captain Daniel Leary and Adele Mundy. I'm astonished that it came out in May 2009 and I haven't got to it yet. I really like this series.

Right now I'm reading "Mother's Milk" by Andrew Thomas Breslin:

There's a huge dairy industry conspiracy. Cow milk isn't what we thought it was, and the "milk thugs" are working to keep it covered up. "Mother's Milk" is funny, mysterious and engaging. I highly recommend it!

I decided I wanted to give Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series another shot, after giving up on it about 10 years back, so I picked up the first book, The Eye of the World, from Amazon a few weeks ago.

Well, that was a mistake. Not only does the e-book look like an OCR rush job with little or no additional proofreading (in addition to other improbable errors, I've lost track of how many times the word "whatever" appears initial-capped in the middle of a sentence) but it also seems I have a lot less patience for Jordan's interminable style than I did when I was a teenager. (And since I was a teenager when I stopped reading the series the first time, obviously I didn't have enough patience then either.) So I guess the question here would be... what was I thinking? I'll finish the book, but I'm pretty sure I won't be picking up any further entries.

After I slog through that, I've got Margaret Atwood's The Year of the Flood waiting for me. I peeked at the beginning and I'm excited to read more.

I have instituted a "no buy" policy* for the next five months or so (until my birthday) and after that I'm going to have a "read two buy one at most" policy in place. It seems to only thing to do - with my TBR folder currently at 392!

* I'm adding to my fictionwise wishlist instead — currently at 81 titles...

The Windup Girl by Paolo Gabibacilucibuci

I must say, I'm having troubles with this book. English is not my native tongue, so sometimes I don't know if the author is making up words, if it's a name or of it's a "regular" english word I don't understand. And using Stanza, checking the dictionary has gotten a lot harder since the last update, so I go for paragraphs without really understanding what's going on.

Strange. At the same time and extremely interesting take on a possible future of the world. Anyone else feel this way?
