OMG I can't believe this. Apple is the king of hype and people continue to follow along like happy little sheep....

It's this sort of thing -- this manipulation --that turns me against Apple regardless of how good or bad their products are.

Existence helps, I should think.

First, the heading was "...should we reserve a spot..."
No one is suggesting "giving" a spot until we know what the future wonder of the world will be.
Second, if it does a great job in displaying ebooks, newspapers, magazines, pdf files and folks use it for that purpose then I would think it deserves a spot.
Third, if it also massages your back and brushes your teeth; well that's just a plus - so what?

Again, why? There already is an Apple forum... Why should there be a second one?

Perhaps I am missing something - it has happened before - but the Apple Thread I see if for the iPhone/iTouch. Are you suggesting that a tablet/slate be placed in that same thread? Wouldn't that be like placing walking shoes in the same category as bicycles?

YES!
Apple's tablet/slate (if that's what the announcement turns out to be) will sell more units in the first year than all the others combined. If it's a large screen iTouch iPod with a longer-lasting user replaceable battery, connectivity with papers/magazines/books and applications like the iPod - I want one!

If it's nothing more than a large screen Itouch, why not?

If it is nothing more than a large screen iTouch then you win the argument.

...of course, as I said, I would love a large-screen iTouch for e-reading

The point is there is no point in this discussion at all until there is a product. Then if it's an ebook reader then whomever is in charge of this site can decide whether and how it should be part of the site.

It's way pre-mature to even be discussing it.

Makes no difference to me. They can put a section for Honda Civics on here if they want, it effects me not at all.

Hee-hee. Good point.

I'm not planning on purchasing an Apple Slate in any case.

I am concerned about our society though.

Oh dear oh dear. Here we are in the MobileRead forum for people interested in e-readers. And hopefully there is some concensus on what an e-reader is. A device for reading digital books and other documents. A display that allows you to read out of doors or indoors but which does not depend on the screen having its own illumination - though the option to turn illumination on for reading in the dark would be useful! A device with very low power requirements so you can go days or weeks without having to charge the battery. A device that weighs less than the equivalent paper version of the book you are reading.

But along will come the tablet. the slate, whatever Apple decide to call it. And it may do lots of things that e-readers don't do. But because it will allow you to read digital books and documents (albeit without the display advantages, the battery life advantages, the lack of weight advantages) and it comes from Apple the world will change its view of what an e-reader is. It will be as if all the existing devices had ceased to exist. And the world will be a poorer place.

Or it may not be a tablet at all, and it may be unable to display digital books and documents.

And it may never exist at all. Apple has repeatedly denied the existence or coming existence of any such thing.
