I've caved and begun reading The Wheel of Time Series. I'm reading the first book, "The Eye of the World"; I've only just begun it.

A fellow amateur writer, Vinnie Tesla, said in his LiveJournal, "Then I looked at the back cover copy: "Depictions of the future, irregardless of the form they take, always address the present as well." I put he book down and backed away slowly. I am not prepared to pay for writing by people who consider 'irregardless' a word."

http://vinnie-tesla.livejournal.com/62480.html

I pointed out, "Cover copy is almost never written by the author(s) of a book. More likely, those immortal words were penned by someone in the Marketing Department, where literacy and accuracy are hinderances, not assets.

"The intersection of porn and SF was once thought to be the exclusive province of Philip Jose Farmer, but I've been enjoying Dave Smeds (Reed Manning) and Robert Silverberg, among others. Most recently, Steve Jordan tickled my fancy (no multiple entendrres intended.)"

So in turn he pointed out Circlet Press http://www.circlet.com/ and reminded me of Piers Anthony. The original topic of his post was a book titled Do Androids Sleep with Electic Sheep?, a book about the intersection of SF and porn.

I've just finished the first four books of John Ringo's Paladin of Shadows series and have cracked open book 5. Also read McCaffrey's Dragonsong and Dragonsinger. Dragondrums is in the backpack for work breaks.

I just started "The Ghost and Mrs. McClure" by Alice Kimberly in ebook. I'm in the worst kind of mood for cozy mysteries lately.

Just started Dennis Lehane's PRAYERS FOR RAIN.

Was there a film based on this one? I read that Paramount bought the rights but don't recall a film.

And it turns out this is one is OK. I would have said it was good, perhaps very good, but it is let down by the occasional infodump of stuff completely irrelevant to the story. The main instance is a long, boring, explanation of a theory about how subatomic particles are put together, and how the big bang may have happened, which could all have been replaced by simply saying in a couple of sentences that some new theories had lead to a cheap way to produce large quantities of antimatter.

Now onto a SF/Mystery, The Counterfeit Heinlein by Laurence M. Janifer. One of his stories about Gerald Knave, Survivor. I find I bought this one back in July 2003 - but I don't think I've read it yet. I remember enjoying the previous one, Alienist.

I keep meaning to check that series out. They have the series in a bundle on Sony for a decent price.

On a tip from a friend, I dropped everything and started "Haunting Jordan" by P.J. Alderman. It's about a woman who moves to Washington State and buys a huge old Victorian - not knowing the house is already inhabited by two ghosts. The ghosts soon make themselves known, and want Jordan to find who killed one of them. Jordan has problems of her own, however, as she's under suspicion for the murder of her late husband, who was her almost-ex husband at the time of his killing.
It's one of those with a few chapters in the present, and then a few chapters in the past, telling both stories. Really good!
