Trying to escape my cats, but the only way I can do that is by going to bed early. Luckily I have a good book!

Deciding if I should jump into Kubuntu on my Ubuntu box. I know everyone shouts that KDE is better but I'm not convinced, I really like my current install (9.04).....what do you think?

Those little Travelocity statues are so much cuter than KDE.

I always have problems with KDE. Stick with Gnome or maybe try XFCE (Xubuntu). I'm looking into going 'pure' Debian soon, just to give it a whirl. Haven't installed Debian in years, so it should be fun.

I am calming down after having discovered that my PC's weird behaviour this morning (it thinks it's Sept. 18, 2001) is not the result of a virus. Time to backup the BIOS settings and replace the CMOS battery, is all. Which reminds me how grateful I am that our 8+ year old WinXP computer has been relatively trouble-free (aside from adding memory and replacing the failed hard drive once). Can I get another 8 years from it, please?

8 years ago they were still building computers with some integrity. I have a 10 year old Fujitisu Laptop and an 8 year old Dell Laptop that are still going strong although they're not the fastest computers in our house or the prettiest (the older one is missing a couple of keys). We use them mainly for surfing the web now. We bought a Gateway about 3 years ago that barely made it through the first year.

Sure. Saddle up ol' Bess and trot into the General Store and ask Mr Carter to put that on your tab. Then you can crank up that newfangled radio thing and listen to The Shadow when it comes on at 8:00 PM. After that, blow out the candles and crawl into your straw tick bed and have a comfy night's sleep.

Currently wondering why I bothered watching Sherlock Holmes, or any other recent Hollywood movie. It was 'meh' at best, just another flashy, ridiculous story about super-humans, but this time they didn't have uniforms. There was a list somewhere online the other day of the 24 MUST-SEE movies of this year -- I wanted to watch 2 of them.

In the advertisements, it seemed like they had really veered from the original stories. I like Robert Downey Jr. a lot, but even he wasn't a big enough draw for me to spend money to see the movie. My older kids saw it last night and weren't overly impressed. They said it was entertaining but a little far fetched.

Well here's my opinion, and I'm not a massive Holmes fan although I do love the Basil Rathbone movies; this could have been a story about anybody. Downey is good, Jude Law is good, but this wasn't Sherlock Holmes. In this version Holmes is a dangerously erratic, mentally ill, pugilist with a crush on Watson. Watson is, well, blank and doesn't have much character at all throughout the film. The story is flimsy at best, and the CSI-like crash-zooms into flashbacks and flash-forwards are annoying as hell. All of this takes place in a CGI London more fake than any I've seen before.

I always like your reviews, Moejoe. You tell it like you see it and that's very refreshing.

My husband loved the books and was also a big fan of the Basil Rathbone movies. He was excited to see this movie when it was announced but became disgusted with the preliminary reviews. It's not that he doesn't like new twists on old stories, but this isn't a twist, it's a completely different universe.

If you're a big fan of the original stories like your husband, this movie will annoy the hell out of you from about the first minute onwards. There are some great twists on the Holmes mythology that build upon or veer away from Holmes, especially in movies. Without a Clue is a great one, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother another, and my all-time favourite 'They Might Be Giants'. This new iteration is just an action movie that has borrowed the names for 'brand recognition'.
