we can see grass for the first time this year. still plenty of snow lying on the fields and untreated roads, though. rain falling on the ice makes walking and driving rather tricky !

currently damp, grey but at least not too much wind today - but still chilly.

Until recently, I thought the phrase "as pure as the driven snow" was ironic, as in "driven-on by cars". Well, that's what we have now. Beautifully gray, melting, driven-on and trodden-on and generally abused snow. Snow is great when it's fresh, it's great when it goes away because you're quickly fed up, but this in-between phase...yuck!

It's taking a long time here to get that state. We had a bit of it the day before yesterday, but the wind picked up yesterday again and a fresh layer of driven snow was put on top again. Besides, our driveway is still nice and clean even though we park the car there every night.

I was told the other day that the French for slush is 'neige fondante'.

We have that phase for months on end here. The stuff on the yards stays pretty and white, but the streets and the piles pushed up by the plows gets grey and yucky pretty fast.

It's actually quite warm here in PA. I think it was up to 45 degrees or higher. Nice change from the twenties.
