This is a good development. Here's the current non-English language distribution for Kindle books, and it shows how lopsided the current Kindle store is:
French: 1293 Spanish: 1282 German: 780 Italian: 142 Portugese: 87 Latin: 26 Dutch: 17 To put things in perspective, FeedBooks has 790 French books. However, as wallcraft said above, this is also about opening up DTP to other countries - which could also mean many more new self-published English books. |

There's your opportunity to go into the business and produce a better product instead of just sitting there gripping. And no, I don't own a Kindle. |

Well doing right-to-left is a breeze. Just make sure the text is that way. And if need be, I'm sure someone can write a program that can take the text and reverse it for left-to-right reading.
As for column type text, that is a lot harder to do with reflow. |

My favourite fact about Japanese writing: there exists tategaki which is one character high, which means it's effectively horizontal, right-to-left. You'll see this on the side of trucks, for example: left-to-right on the left side of the truck, and right-to-left on the right side. The Japanese have to be insanely flexible in their reading ability!

ahahaha..it also seems to be second nature-after seeing this topic, I asked my wife if the "left to right across/front to back" format was getting more common-she first said "yes, they use both a lot-mostly classics are right to left/back to front, but more modern stuff may be either"..but we glanced at her pile of current fashion/food/style magazines, popular novels, and other japanese reading material she gets sent to her..all of it is down/right to left/ back to front format!

Very true! It would drive me crazy trying to read English with the letters in any other order than left-to-right, but in Japan they seem to read and write any which way. (Except I've never seen bottom-to-top; it wouldn't surprise me, though...)

I had a quick look - you still had to give a US bank account (and tax info) it seems - or you could get a cheque. Maybe they have still to sort that out?

Amazon's next big evolution is the iKindles, so they needed to do that.

Yes, but my question was whether HTML does support top to bottom writing. I honestly can't recall ever having seen it.
