sorry to put you out by recommending your opinion Harry. I'll certainly never do it again.

You didn't "put me out" in the slightest; I was just commenting that I'd already actually done what you were suggesting

Hello. Would somebody be able to give advice on 'grayscale' please? I'm looking for a simple 5 inch device to use while commuting so am looking to decide between the Cybook Opus, PocketBook 360 or BeBook Mini. There does not seem to be a whole lot between them, except that the BeBook Mini has 8 levels of gray, while the Opus and 360 have 4 levels of gray each. Would I be right in guessing that grayscale would improve the appearance of images but would have no discernible advantage in displaying text? (I am only interested in reading text). Grateful for opinion on this.

Theoretically, it should allow better "anti-aliasing" of text. In practice, I certainly don't see any visible difference.

Thanks Harry. Has anyone any experience of the BeBook Mini \ EZ Reader Pocket PRO - I believe they are identical devices?

They are identical, except that the Pocket Pro comes with a fake leather case (and you need some kind of case to protect the screen). This is a good basic reader, with a lower price than the Opus and 360 even though it has slightly better hardware than the other two. At present I would say that the Opus has the best ePub and the 360 the best PDF viewer, but the Pocket Pro isn't far behind (perhaps 2nd best in both PDF and ePub) and all three are "good enough". Both PocketBook and Jinke have been very responsive to their readers, with frequent and significant firmware upgrades. Bookeen is slower to produce new firmware, but their ePub viewer illustrates that they know what reader's want and they get there eventually.

Thanks for the advice Wallcraft. Tough choice. I really like the armour cover for the 360 to reduce size, very clever - this was nearly going to swing it for me. However I don't like the page-turn click and it looks too wide. And I don't want or need a highly customizable device where I end up spending more time configuring it than reading on it. I like the styling and simple button layout of the Opus, however the plastic exterior looks flimsy. I think I may plump for the Pocket Pro\BeBook Mini, as a compromise. It is slightly cheaper, looks solid, has slightly better hardware, yet is slightly smaller than the other two, even if it does look like a calculator gone wrong. Plus I see no need for an accelerometer - would prefer to rotate screen via a button if I ever need to.

Taking on board your advice and after doing some more research, I've decided on the 360 and have just placed my order. The 360 has the most personality of all the 5" devices, for me, and seems to have that cultish following that reminds me of the early days of the ipod. The bezel, which at first I thought made the device look too wide, now looks like it would make for more comfortable holding (I forgot that you need to be able to hold the thing) and the styling has grown on me. Plus I like the search feature and the black colouring option, which the Opus doesn't have. The cover is another advantage over the rest. The only major downside for me is the price, I shelled out almost €250 for this, with delivery. The Sony Pocket, for example, I could have got for €70 to €80 less (and in a local shop).

Just to let you know, I received my Pocketbook 360 several days ago and am very happy with it. Perfect for commuting.
I was initially worried that I couldn't set the text to the right size when reading epub books (either slightly too small or slightly too large) but once I realised I could open them with FBReader and set the font type and size, as well as the spacing and justification as I wished, it solved all my problems. Thanks for the advice guys. |
