I had my PSR-500, but I couldnt download the gift from Connect, coz outside US, and coz Syria not very good relations with US (they blocked our IP sometimes). I have to solve this problem, and I do it, I use a computer linked to the internet via UN, so that Connect thought I am American... and download the 150 $ books gift. I hope some of u find this way useful....

Welcome to MobileRead, Dr. Rustom!
![]() That's a very clever solution! I'm glad you shared it with us, I expect that some others may be able to make use of that little trick. ![]() |

And I doubt they'd send you a receipt for it as well so if it breaks during the warranty period, you are screwed. I mean right now you can probably find someone int he US to handle sending it to Sony for you. as long as you pay all the costs and have a receipt. But buying from ebay, you have no receipt. Yea, it may be brand new, but did they sellers say you'd get a receipt for it that was valid to use for the warranty? I think not.

Good grief, Jon - not everyone on eBay is a con merchant! I bought my Reader on eBay for "over the odds" and was happy to do so. Nobody forced me to buy it - it was my personal decision to do so. Both me and the seller end up happy. Everybody wins.

You're right on that. It's a gamble for me too, but I usually buy them without warranty in mind anyway. I mean, if I import it through a real store, I'd still be paying a lot of mailing costs if something is to happen. That'd easily go into the hundreds of dollar (sending it to the store, and them sending it back) so... And besides, a lot of companies who only sell their products in certain part of the world, won't give warranty to other continents if they're not sold through regular channels. |

You're right. Sony UK wouldn't touch the Reader, because it's only sold in the US. If it went wrong I'd have to pay to send it for repair in the US, and it wouldn't be a warranty repair.

Guys, the real scum is in Moscow. They sell the reader for $600!!! and you know what? There are people who prefer to pay the price instead of buying it on bhphoto

There is one choice, find someone on the forum (who lives in the USA) whom you feel you trust enough to buy a Reader for you and send it over. The person on the forum is probably not going to be out to make a profit.
At say $299 with 5% tax and $85 to ship, the reader would only cost $398.95. And that's without making any profit. And the person who purchased the reader would have the receipt and if it broke, you'd be able to send it back to the purchaser to send to Sony for warranty repair. But again, you do take a risk that said person is not going to run away with your money. Of course if you want some recourse, have that person put a bid up on ebay for the reader and then buy it there and you will have some recourse just in case. |

Those of us who live in Europe are used to the idea that we will pay more for things than people in the US do - it's just the way things are. I paid the equivalent of about US$620 for my Reader, and was happy to do so. For me, it's worth that, although I appreciate that it might not be for everyone.

VAT is 17.5% in the UK, plus 6% (I think) import duty on something like the Reader. Whether or not you pay it depends how it's shipped - if it's sent via a Courier service you'll always pay the taxes; it's it's sent by the normal postal service they may or may not collect the tax - it's pretty random.

you are not always charged with customs tax. So it's all about luck.
I paid about 470 dollar for mine, including mailing through fedex, but no customs tax. As for running it through a forum member. This takes quite long. First you have to find one person you can trust, then in some way sent money to them. (S)he has to go and buy the reader, then mail it. This will take at least a week. I wanted mine ASAP. |
