I'm a USA-an, and have suffered humiliation and criticism for being "stuck up and pedantic" for being specific about locations. I can't win.

Many of our members are new, and don't realize just how world wide this forum is.

It took me a while to truly understand the enormity of the concept. We're used to dealing more locally.

Listing location is totally voluntary, and many would prefer to keep their anonymity.

Its equally frustrating to deal with problems that people ask for help with when you don't know where they are located. Location is important because availability of books, prices, shipping, etc varies so much around the world.

Shoot. It took me ages to figure out where "oz" was. I finally had to ask.

So be patient with us. Its not that big of a thing, when you realize no one is doing it to be deliberately obtuse....a simple request for location will undoubtedly bring results...

I don't mind people saying they're from state AZ, or CA or NM, I know most of the bigger ones anyway thanks to an insatiable curiosity!

For my 2cents worth it would be helpful if everybody could at least specify what country they are in - and maybe their nationality, if not the same.

There is a place in Alaska and also in France with a one letter (and unabbreviated) name: "Y." Also a village called "Å" in Norway.
Also plenty of unabbreviated two letter place names here.

I like the longer names better:

It would depend... if you ask for help buying something, yes. Otherwise, it doesn't matter. I find it fun trying to find out where people come from. (and in my case, I probably would have to enter some GPS code there, as even people who live 8km away generally don't know my village

)
