Thank you AJ Star and French

You both are terrific. I am SO filled with happiness and delight for what is soon coming. I just wish I could share it all. CES was a real eye-opener and the new devicesw are just what MobileRead has been asking for. Dale DePriest was there and had one of the prototypes overnight. He noted what we could better... but overall seemed to love the device very much. I want to work as a TEAM on these projects... and I am sure we will include all in discussion when we can. The key thing is that Little Astak was a Big Boy at CES. Where we were always "another brand" before... we were a major player and received that way at CES. To be sure, Rob of the Washington Post again snubbed us... but that was his loss as other reviewers and media flocked to us. I was called "Father of the CES eBook Pavilion" and my idea for CES blossomed into eBook Madness!! Where Big Screen TV's reigned supreme and netbooks were stealing the show in years past... the crowds were out in force in the eBook Tech-Zone and were delighted over and over with the Pocket PRO. We would take it out of the case and people were astonished at how light it felt and how great it was to hold. Page turn speed was noted by all who tried the scroll wheel and saw it put thru its advantages. AND... finally... reporters were coming to us and noting the problem with one or a few websites you could buy from with Kindle and Sony. They are really embracing Open Format!! |

Robert, glad to hear that you made it back, more or less, in one piece.
I am very interested, read totally sold, on the 9 incher, and as it probably won't be available when I am in China in February, I will most probably be looking at picking one up from you guys. |

welcome back from CES!!!... THAT's the news I was waiting since a whole year or so...since I was and I am actually still convincted 9" is the minimum to read books and pdfs really easy... In fact I think this year will be the 9"-9.7" year since also Hanlin created his A9 which looks interesting... but I would trust Astak since with you, Robert, there's more contact with consumers... Obviously it has to follow market's directions: past years were time of 5"-6" devices, now it's mature for 9"-10" products I guess... in fact there are also rumors from Apple which will produce its 9"-10" tablet-ebook... Yes there was iRex but it was only the exception that confirmed market's rule.. in fact how many people bought iRex devices with its high price?... So I'm here waiting for more news about Astak's 9"-inch product details... let's keep in touch! :-) See you around! Ciao, Luigi |

Luigino, Astak's 9 incher will be the Jinke A9, but there will also be a netronix device which we haven't seen yet.

Well.... Mr.Dailliard, Robert said about a product which will have "Adobe Digital Editions and about 20 other formats" as he said... I don't think Jinke A9 will have 20 other formats since it's already mentioned on Jinke's website they have something like 10 formats...
Plus, was somewhere mentioned Astak's 9"-inch will be Jinke's A9?... I didn't read anything but I couldn't have looked well... Ciao, Luigi |

I agree that Astak has not said. On the other hand, Astak only has two known suppliers Jinke and Netronix and of the two only Jinke has announced a 9" product. Note that the 9" screens are from SiPix and so are less likely to appear in Netronix kit because they are part owned by PVI (which makes the 9.7" screens). The SiPix screens are an unknown quantity, but the capacitive touch option is a plus and 9" might be the right "large" size for everyday use. I really liked the 8" screen on my iLiad for around the house use, although it was a bit big for airplane travel.

Glad to hear that Astak will have new Ereaders coming out soon. Judging from the new ebook readers announcement from the CES...most of the readers coming out will be 7" - 10" with touch screen function. Is the 5" ebook reader being obsolete soon?

I don't think it is obsolete. What we are seeing is more "full featured" devices, which are more expensive (and perhaps more profitable). There is always going to be room at the bottom for no frills, side-load and read, devices and at present they are best represented by the 5" screen. By the way I don't mean "bottom" in a pejorative sense, the current crop of 5" readers have mature software stacks and work very well at doing exactly one thing.
In the US we are seeing Sony and (in particular) B&N setting them selves up as hubs for OTA (over the air) delivery of ebooks. So there is a question whether a "basic" reader will eventually come to include 3G or WiFi. The RCA Lexi is going to have two models with and without WiFi for example. |

5 inch anything but "obsolete"!
Quote:
The 5 inch captured more attention than all other products combined. While there is definitely a market for larger... it will not be at the expense of the 5 inch. I see the 5 inch being an incredibly viable market long-term. The ease and convenience of the 5 inch makes it the ideal travel-mate. When I was flying down and back with CES, I gave this a lot of thought. I was reading on my 5 inch and the lady next to me had a hard.cover book. I felt sorry for her as she could not fit the thing into the seat back pocket or put it anywhere else that was convenient. So would be the case for a 9-10 inch. While I am delighted with the advent of the 9 inch... filling a definite need also... I see it very viable for newspapers, magazines and textbooks. I see the convenience of the 5 inch as just about perfect. People simply could not believe the lightness of the Pocket PRO or the amount of eBooks and music it could hold. The 5 inch became our big gun at CES! Likewise, the 6 inch captured attention for its clear display and smoothness of operation. So, I think all will be happy! The market for eBook Readers is simply exploding! As Bob Dylan said: "Don't speak too soon, for the wheels still in spin, and there's no telling who that its naming". |

Welcome back and sorry to hear about the bum knee! I've been to enough big events to understand what you went through and how you might be feeling right now. The urge to crawl into a deep, dark hole all alone for awhile does battle with the mound of work waiting for you. Somehow the mound of work always wins.

I wouldn't want an e-reader bigger than 5". It would be unmanageable one-handed and wouldn't fit in the inside pocket of my favourite coat.
When people want to see my Pocket Pro, one of the things that makes them happy is how small and light it is. |

Another 5" fan here...and I love love love love the form factor of it. There are 2 things that would make the Pocket Pro perfect for me. I wouldn't mind a bit more contrast on the display...which isn't a deal breaker...I happen to be someone who reads in low light pretty regularly so it would be nice but not necessary as I can still read it without a separate book light. And I would love to have 3G IF it came with a very robust library with competitive pricing. I love my Pocket Pro, but if a version came out tomorrow with these features I'd buy another one right now (and probably give my current Pocket Pro to a family member...my Dad was eyeing it up at Christmas time).
I'm SO glad to see your message here Robert...it's for selfish reasons...but I'm really happy to see that the 5" has captured attention. This tells me that my "perfect" eReader may very well be on its way to market as I type. ![]() Quote:
