The BBC is almost entirely paid for through the "Television Licence". Any household in the UK that owns equipment capable of receiving live television programmes must pay an annual licence fee. It's currently £142.50, about $230.
Total BBC income for the year (2008/9) was £4.6 billion. The vast majority, £3.5 billion, is from the licence fee. The government pays the BBC around £295 million a year, almost entirely to cover the cost of the BBC World Service. The remaining income come from the BBC's commercial arm, about 775 million a year (from selling BBC programmes to other broadcasters, and DVDs, etc.) And yes, this means that on BBC TV and radio there are no commcerials. Between programmes, the BBC often runs trailers for other programmes, but not in the middle of programmes. So when a programme is listed at running from 8pm to 9pm, it has very about 59 minutes of actual content. Personally, I count the 40p (65¢ per day) to be very well worth it. Ditto. And especially for radio (I really hate commercial radio - TV adverts seem less intrusive, maybe because I listen to the radio more than watch TV... dunno) |

I've yet to fork over the money to upgrade Tivo and DirecTV to HD as I have a lifetime Tivo subscription that paid for itself several years ago. If I upgrade (already have my TV itself) then I have to pay for Tivo sub as well as increased monthly DirecTV prices!!!

I still have a TiVo Series 2 with a lifetime subscription (and an upgraded hard drive). Cable is not an option in my condo building, so that TiVo is in storage. I pull it out every year or so and let it call home then I put it away. When next I move, if I have cable available, it will go in my office and the HD TiVo will stay in the Living Room.

But, cable is so expensive these days... I am strongly considering going OTA only and d/l-ing stuff that I can't get with my antenna... that would mostly be stuff that is on SyFy and my Daily Show/Colbert report. I'm not sure why to continue paying cable when I can get 95% of what I watch for free OTA and the rest for free online. It would save me about $70 a month. We get all our movies from Blockbuster DVD by mail. Once my 3 years is up on TiVo I might go over to Windows Media Center rather than pay the fee. Not sure on that one yet. BOb |

Bob's talking about downloading TV shows with bittorrent - something which is not legal, but which almost certainly falls "under the radar" of those looking to punish illegal downloaders, since there's no money involved.

KK, not sure if Bob and I are talking exactly the same thing or not, but ....
There are a few internet services that provide video...basically for free and with a computer/personal DVR to record and/or watch connected to your HD TV then no need for DirecTV or Cable or other pay services. Of course not everything is available. Things like hulu and others. I could watch my local news in HD just over the air. And if I could get BBCA, Nova, Nature, etc. I'd be set. ![]() |
