I actually quite like it on my Sony Reader. I like the concept a ton and as I said am an avid user on my Mac and Blakcberry as well.

I do find the navigation a tad annoying and would even with a touch screen on the reader as when reading a long article that jumps to a new section, it is hard to get back to where the article started (the original page).

I also don't understand why the pages that are not viewable, they just show a pic of the page are not the full screen size, just a small thumbnail.

Overall however I am very happy.

I tried it on my Kindle and I *don't* like it. Yes, you get all the pictures but when you go to the individual articles the pictures are not with the article. Navigation is far slower than the same newspaper from Amazon. On the Kindle you navigate to the next article by using the teeny joy stick. A right press takes you to the next article (or chapter in a book) and a left press on the joy stick takes you to the previous article. Pressing the joy stick directly into the Kindle brings up the article list. With Newspaperdirect you navigate by having to highlight the link on the screen which takes longer. I have the same issue with using Calibre for feeds but I don't know enough to program it myself.

I do like the service and the newpapers are great to read on a PC/Mac. Plus, you can set up alerts for specific searches and have the results emailed to you.

Thanks for sharing that. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I had considered using NewspaperDirect, but took the RSS / Calibre route instead.

I think the NewspaperDirect interface would work better on a PC rather than a hand-held device - mainly because it's designed for mouse techniques, popup windows and the like (for example, you can hover the mouse over a headline to pop up a synopsis of the article).

Re your point about difficult naviagtion with Calibre / feeds, I simply use the "next page" button to navigate through the stories. This is using the Mobi Pocket reader on a notebook computer. I guess with the slower page turns of a Kindle it would be a lot less convenient, but in general I find that using Calibre to convert the feeds, and then reading it in Mobi, is a good combination.

@TallMomof2: You navigate in calibre newspapers on the kindle by using the joystick as well (this feature was added a while ago to calibre)

The other advantage the Kindle and Calibre papers have is that all pages of the article are consecutive. No need to jump around and try to find you way back.

Yes. This is pretty darn annoying to do with the Newspaper direct stuff on the Sony as of now.

I downloaded 'USA Today' to test the graphics handling on the Kindle and they do include photos from the stories in the main text versions.

Maybe it depends on the newspapers?

The Independent (UK) definitely does too. I like that they don't limit it to photos on top. They include them in the middle of stories also, unlike the Kindle editions from Amazon.

But navigation is far preferable on the Amazon version. However, NewspaperDirect has 1,400+ newspapers while Amazon has 92 currently.

And you can can do a Kindle-style search on a keyword and see all occurrences of it in the full issue, offline.

They eventually will do wireless access for Kindles so at that point I hope they also improve the navigational routines.

I do like seeing the actual newspaper layout, and that free online reading of 2 articles per day from each newspaper is nice. I use other newspaper-collections, but they don't have the export-to-ereader functions.

I think he meant that going from current page to the next article involved having to take your cursor to one of the links above.

The NextPage/PrevPage buttons really are not that slow at all with these files unless there is a BIG graphic coming up next. I think only the Kindle 1 page turns are noticeably slower than other e-readers though they improved that with some cacheing method for 2nd of 2 pages taken at once.

I think you're right. All I'm saying is that to get to the next article, I find it easier just to page through the current article until I get to the end. On a laptop screen, most articles are only two or three pages anyway, so it's no great effort to do that.
