I watched a documentary called "The Bridge" a couple of months ago after having heard about it while riding a bike across the Golden Gate bridge. Very good movie and it's available (for free) on Hulu. After watching the movie, it's probably a good idea to google it and read the filmaker's website.

Also, I watched "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days." Pretty powerful little film out of Romania. It's available as a Watch-Instantly movie on Netflix.

Finally, as far as "The Road" is concerned, although I haven't seen the movie yet, it's a must-read, imo.

The movie I saw in the last year or so that impressed me most was The Reader. A Serious Man is also excellent.

I liked The Wrestler, The Soloist and Brothers.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas was too implausible to work for me.

A lot of humorous movies are disappointing. They're just not all that funny. Pirate Radio, for example. Bruno was much more amusing.

I haven't seen The Road. I am familiar with the book. The notion of it as a date movie is certainly interesting. Whether that works might depend on whom you're dating.

We've been watching blurays on the new telly (our first HD telly).

Transformers - this is crap. I look forward to seeing the sequel. Hopefully it is less plot and more splodeys. Sometimes I have very simple, base tastes.

Star Trek - I've never been a Star Trek watcher, except for the occasional episode and movie. This movie I enjoyed very much, because I enjoyed it more than I expected. Spock was quite wonderful.

Hellboy II - I liked this, but then I liked the first one. I suspect I miss much, not having read the...comics?...as there are scenes that seem intentionally taken from that media and pushed into place. I don't mind this - I think it's good to honour that - but I think it might make for a less "smooth" sense of direction. Still, I liked it.

WALL-E - I've actually seen this before. I like this movie. I like the dialogue-without-dialogue for so much of it. I'm not that interested in the human story, though being Disney it's not like I didn't expect to be beaten over the head with that aspect.

Terminator Salvation - Okay. It felt somewhat nonsensical at times, and the end was pretty ordinary (and not in a "left open for a sequel" way, which I'm okay with, but in a forced-plot way that just irritated a bit. The suggested alternate ending was even less feasible, though I did like its inherent twist). Still, splodeys, big mean machines, CRASH, BANG, POW! I'm okay with that. I've always liked the franchise, and I look forward to the next ones.

The Warlords - Not very good. Simple war and bloodthirst. It felt fairly simplistic in plot, as if written for a young, unsophisticated crowd, while pretending to be sophisticated Art of War stuff. This may seem like hypocrisy, in light of my Transformers comments, but I just feel that this movie wasn't what it was trying to be, which felt like a war-based Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (a movie I do enjoy).

Note that the above is not meant to be complicated commentary and critique. None of these movies are ones I'd pick as "all-time favourites", but were picked by others as something we all might watch. I'd pick them on that basis, but would probably have picked something else if it was just for me. So, this was more being watched out of simple hedonism than for any edifying experience. If Star Trek was "wrong", or I missed some point in The Warlords, or Transformers was "stupid, mindless, product placement", that's okay. I wasn't watching with a critic's eyes. Please don't feel insulted by my simplistic opinions, as they are simplistic.

Cheers,
Marc

Just got this on DVD (at last)

The Friends of Eddie Coyle.

Based on the best-selling novel by George V. Higgins, The
Friends of Eddie Coyle chronicles the last days of a weary Boston-based
weapons dealer. Eddie Coyle (Robert Mitchum) doesn't want to serve a
life sentence in prison, so he becomes an informant for both the police
and the treasury department. Coyle is likewise unwilling to give up his
lifestyle, thus he continues his illegal gun-running operation for the
underworld. The mob becomes aware that Eddie is squealing to the cops,
so they send his best friend, Dillon (Peter Boyle), to rub him out.
Dillon compassionately takes Eddie out on the town, treating him to
dinner and a hockey game...then drives to a deserted field to carry out
his orders.

I'm a big fan of prequels, even though it is usually quite confusing and half the time you try to find errors and holes

I really enjoyed Star Trek, one of the most fun (funnest?) of the entire Star Trek movies.
Also Terminator Salvation which is a sequel packed into a prequel, or vice versa. Christian Bale is just amazing. But despite it all I found the action in T3 to be almost more intense. The scene with Arnie hanging on to that big yellow crane thing is just mind blowing. I guess it's because so much of "everyday stuff" gets destroyed and I can relate to that a lot better than some futuristic vehicles exploding.

And wall-e is on pole position of my "best CG movie of all times". Soooo qwute!

Because Germans (and Austrians, generally all of Europe) like to demonstrate Superior Taste by putting down anything that Comes from across the Big Pond.

I agree A Serious Man is an amazing movie.
So many memorable moments in this one.
The whole story, its setting and characters just had me enthralled.
