I could read my large txt-file without any problems before the December 24th, 2009 update. Now rebooting happens only using the CyBook with FW 2.0 - using the same txt-file that works fine with FW 1.5
Even a fresh plain generated 1.500 kByte Lorum Ipsum txt file makes the Cybook FW 2.0 reboot so I don't think it's a weird character in the file.

I sent in this bug to Bookeen - now it's my turn to experience (the many times discussed) customer services response time.
As stated before I prefer FW 2.0 as it gives me pagenumbers - but I can continue reading the mobi books with Fw 1.5 and have a good reason to get a new eReader with flexible, (3D-)color screen for just $100

I would have though txt reading to be the same on 1.5 and 2.0. Guess not.

Olympus: I know that the render engine change between the 1.5 and 2.0 for TXT and HTML files, that may be the reason for this

If anything makes a Cybook crash, it is undoubtedly a bug. No matter how large, malformed or whatever a file may be, it should never make the device crash. Give bad or broken output? maybe, but never crash.

Agreed. Try to parse the document, if it encounters errors then try to correct, if that fails then render the content you can and/or show an error of some kind. Basic exception handling.

I know Eowyn doesn't like me saying this but this firmware release is poor quality and given the number and range of bugs there is no way this was tested properly.

On the plus side, I did actually get a response from Bookeen for my bug report on 28-12-2009:

Quote:
Sir,

We understand your reaction on this matter and we do apologise for the inconvenience.

Our technical team is working on the bug you are referring to in order to bring a solution.

Best regards,
Bookeen Support Team

Bookeen wishes you a Happy New Year!
The reply was received on the 5th January which given the time of year is not bad at all. They need to respond publicly though. Let us know they are aware of the issues (listing them so we can be sure they have them all) and provide some indication of what they intend to do and when. Without using the word "soon" or "Monday"...

Hopefully in the coming week we will start to see some feedback.

that's the reason I reported it as a bug - the major bug in the Mobi-Reader (absence of pagenumbers) never got solved so hopefully they will fix this other in the ePub reader so I'll have the "perfect" device

I had a "stuck in reboot hell" with one epub book I put on the unit. I had just about thrown in the towel and go back to 1.5 when I decided to try Calibre and convert from epub to epub. That seems to have fixed the issue with this one file and it made the file 20% smaller to boot.

Undoubtedly, but it's a lot harder to make devices handle errors "gracefully" than it is to handle correct code, because there are a virtually limitless variety of ways in which things can go wrong.

I don't know if you remember, but a few months ago I had a strange problem in which an ePub file was skipping pages on my Sony, due to what turned out to be incorrectly-nested formatting tags. That particular buggy file caused problems on the Sony, but worked fine on the Opus.

Realistically, all we can do, I think, is to report these issues as we find them, and allow Bookeen to sort them out.
