I know this thread has degraded from the original topic and I do admit I've helped it do so. So to get back on topic.
If Apple makes a tablet that's just a larger iPod Touch, then I don't see it as anything special and really think it's a waste of Apple's time to do this. But if the tablet is a true OS X computer, then it might be ok. That we'd have to wait and see. |

I really do swing between the two ideas , Im really happy with using my iphone for games, reading(short), web(brief), music, email, calendar, as a vnc client to control my mac at home and then other bits and bobs. Thats mostly what I would use my tablet for as well as probably typing a little and watching movies. So actually a big iPhone would do for me 95% of the time. Not sure what I would gain by having a larger more functional OS on there? however if that were its design i would not want to pay more than $600. If it were a small computer that I can dock at home and use my bluetooth keyboard with allowing me to lose the laptop then I would be prepared to pay more like $1000. Key differences i would want for teh extra cost are a full OSX and at least 200Gb storage. |

![]() I'm not sure it would be a waste of Apple's time to design, market, and sell a larger iPod Touch. I would wager there are a great number of people that want what's basically a cut down computer for internet browsing, emailing, reading blogs/articles/forums, etc... Let's face it, you don't need a desktop, nor a laptop, or even a netbook, to do those things. A tablet, if it's thin and light enough, could serve that purpose very well. Add in Bluetooth connectivity to a keyboard and mouse, now you have a really decent solution for banging out longer emails. Once you're done, pick it up off a dock (speculation) and walk about your house. On the flip side, I would rather have a machine that runs Snow Leopard, or at least a compact version of it. I'd want something that can run OS X AND Windows 7. Why? Because I realize that each has their strengths and weaknesses. If having that ability made it over $1000, no thanks. It all depends though, and there simply is too much speculation in the market to make any kind of decision at this time. Last edited by chainring; 01-09-2010 at 05:52 PM. Reason: punctuation |

The problem with a large iPod Touch tablet is that if it's just a bigger screen, then really, it's not going to be all that useful. Let's say the price is $1000. Would you want a tablet for that much that's fairly closed? The iPod Touch is a closed system. Apple is keeping control over it. For a tablet to be of use, it should be open like a computer is. So really, any tablet from Apple should be an OS X based tablet and fully open.

Time will have to tell on the possibly "closed" nature, if it truly is a large iPod Touch. I might be construed as an Apple fanboy, simply due to owning a MacBook Pro (2006 model), a Mac Mini (2006 Intel), a 5th gen iPod, and a 2nd gen Nano. I appreciate what they each do, but I'm under no illusion that they're perfect. The iPods I leave alone. They play all my non-iTunes AAC files just fine. My MBP and Mini, I dual boot with Win 7 Ultimate, and have VMWare Fusion to run Ubuntu. Why? I realize that most of the strong video encoding tools are on Windows. Software like MeGUI, RipBot264, etc... I happen to like foobar 2000 for managing my music library, and The Godfather for audio file tagging. Playing back those same video and audio files gets handled by Plex on the Mac side of things. Each does something really well, and I go with it. Play on the strengths of one to avoid the weaknesses of another. Thinking about it a little more, I'm not sure I'd even pay $1000 for a true OS X tablet. That's getting to 13" MacBook Pro territory. I'd say $600 - $800 could capture my attention. Last edited by chainring; 01-09-2010 at 05:55 PM. Reason: Amending thoughts. |

From the rumors I've read the mythical tablet will be 10" and use OSX but apps are being developed for it so the tablet sounds like a mixture of OSX and the iPhone OS.
I'm a tinkerer and am always building a PC or upgrading one. I even installed OSX on a Dell Mini 10v for my daughter because she likes OSX. It works quite well (about 95% of the OSX functions work great) but I think I'm going to install Win7 on it so it's easy to backup to my server which runs WHS. I used to have a dual boot Hackintosh but the last time I rebuilt it I left out OSX because I wasn't using it at all. It's pretty and I can do everything that I can in Win7 but I'm used to Windows products. I've never had a problem with virus or spyware on any of my home PCs (4 desktops and 2 laptops). There are plenty of free programs that monitor and take care of those potential problems. Apple products are very pretty and easy to use but I like to tinker and Apple products aren't conducive to that. Plus they are very expensive. If Apple were more open to DIYers then I'd be more of a supporter. |

Curious: How many of you Macheads have MSWord on your Mac? love the irony in that. anways. I think Apple makes some good products. But, As others have said they take an old idea and put "wow" into it. They are good at that. As April has said there are many Macheads out there that go on and on about their apple products and give cliiches such as " no viruses, no trojans" "simple" etc.... However, I could say the same about my 5 year old pc that had never had a glitch. So what.... Apple Tablet: With the hype that Apple has these days they could sell a Mactoaster and it would do well. good on them, it is a free market. IN the end we all want a good computer no matter the company. hopefully we all are happy with our purchases; but it is fun to niggle each other from time to time. NB: Apple is not the first company to make a Tablet. |

For me a tablet only makes sense as an even more portable laptop replacement, since a tablet as a reader replacement is still at least 2 years away. For that it would have to have a full fledged operating system, a separate stand, it must be no more than 1 1/2 pounds, accept bluetooth keyboard and mouse input, play full HD video, with a battery that lasts a full day, and have a superb screen.
But just a giant size phone or ipod? That wouldn't be worth the cost. Last edited by HansTWN; 01-09-2010 at 07:38 PM. |
