But - at least on the Opus - if you turn the "flashing refresh" off, you very quickly discover the reason that it's there; "ghosting" very quickly builds up on the screen.

Thanks for your help everyone from what Harry says about the non flashing mode I dont think I will make it a priority. The pocketbooks look good, however I would have to have them shipped from an overseeas supplier, and they dont seem to offer any advantge compared to the Sony. So I expect I will get the PRS-600, but might wait untill after CES, and see if any annouchmnets are made about 3G readers in the UK

My understanding is the pocketbooks have a way better format support, especially if you're interested in pdf or djvu.
Besides, you can order them in Germany.

P.S.: on the other hand, 6" is not that good for pdfs/djvus.

The Pocketbook certainly has some extremely nice features, and its ePub display is better in some ways than that of the Sony (but worse in others). The key feature of the Sony for me personally, since I use it to proof-read my eBook on, is its on-screen annotation. That's a feature that the Pocketbook doesn't currently offer.

The Pocketbook 360 is my favourite "portable reader" - it's the one that I always take with me when I go out.

what about onyx boox?
I gather its screen contrast have to be a tick better than that of PRS-600.
It has a pretty good format support and annotating ability.
Can be ordered in the Netherlands.

For me I dont think I will ever annotate, Could you expand Harry on the pros and cons of the pocketbook vs sony in epub support, or point me somewhere
Thanks

The Sony has a very old implementation of ADE - the penalty of being the first device to adopt the format. It does not support full justification, nor does it support many of the more advanced ePub features. There is, however, every hope that Sony will update it in the not too distant future, given that the new PRS-900 has a much better implementation.

The Pocketbook supports all the ePub features, but is currently restricted to three text sizes, which really isn't enough. It is, however, only a few weeks old, and Pocketbook are very proactive in improving their firmware.

For what it's worth, I never thought I would annotate either, (I never ever wrote on my paper books), but I use the feature all the time now.

The pocketbooks look like attractive devices, if I could justify it to myself to buy another reader I would look into them more closely, but.. I've got more than enough already.

Just been looking in to the txtr reader than is now avaiblie in German, it looks like a greate device just got this response from them
Quote:
For the time being, we are able to offer the txtr reader in Germany only. This has to do with the legal situation concerning the distribution of copyrighted works to foreign countries.

Of course we are planning to distribute the reader to other european countries as well and we hope to make this possible during 2010 for most european countries, with the UK being among those on top of the list.

As soon as this will be the case we will of course also be eager to include publications specific to those countries as well. This will most probably be usable without a txtr Pro subscription, just like the whole store is accessible via mobile connection without the subscription already.
Shame not more specific about when in the UK

The black "flash" between page turns on an eInk device. It's necessary to clear the screen.

...sure...but what's the alternative? What do you mean with a "not full-refresh"?

As you see from my profile on the left, I have a lot of different eBook readers. The one that I use day to day is the Sony PRS-600; I find that its features are, for my requirements, the best. My favourite 5" device is the Pocketbook 360. Excellent folder support and a good range of options.
And given Harry's positive review of the 600, I would then go on to recommend the 900.

When B&H gets the 900 in stock, you can order it and have it shipped outside the USA.
