The library shows a few of the books she hasn't moved. I don't think it's a corrupt file system. I read there are some issues with the dictionary speed and told her to create a new folder parallel to the ebooks one, and organise all her books in there. Maybe that's the problem?

In folder view (click the "Menu button", select "Advanced", and make sure the "Folder View" item is checked), the library will show the contents of the folder that you have currently navigated to. That is what I suggest that perhaps she has navigated to the wrong part of the file system.

Thanks Harry.
It seems the advanced menu only has the options languages, slide show, auto power off, flashing refresh and about. She can't find the option about folder view anywhere. I told her to move her books folder inside the ebooks one, now she sees all of her books, but they're not in folders, and some of them are double or triple. Her firmware version is version 1,5 (build 1093) 2003-2009. This is the correct one, isn't it? |

Sorry, my mistake; it's not on the "Advanced" menu, it's on the top-level library menu itself, immediately under the 5, 10, 20 items per page options.
From what you've said, she does NOT have folder view enabled. If folder view isn't enabled, you only see the books that are in the "ebooks" folder (and its sub-folders), so anything outside that folder wouldn't show up. By moving the books into the "ebooks" folder, they are now showing up. They'll show double if the same book is in two different folders. |

Thanks again Harry, finally everything seems to work. She couldn't find the folder view option with no detailed help, it seems she never ever used that specific menu before. I strongly believe the firmware should be accompanied by some more instructions, not only about installing it but about using it too. Anyway, as usual, you can always rely on the helpful mobileread members!

I would strongly recommend people do not use their reader to store the only copy they have of their books - just as you wouldn't use a MP3 player to store the only copy of your music files. It's simply not reliable enough. Store your books on your PC. Back them up. Organize them using Windows Explorer or specialised software like Calibre and copy them across when you want to update.
Otherwise... If your readers file system becomes corrupt - all your books are gone. If your lose your reader - all your books are gone. If your reader is stolen - all your books are gone. If your reader breaks - all your books are gone. I have seen a number of people on these forums saying they are doing this and it worries me! Omk3 - please tell your friend to back up her books! |

That's sound advice, Ramboky, and to be honest I think (and hope) that not many people rely on their readers as the sole backup for their ebooks. I know I have multiple copies of mine (and of my mother's) in several places. Her problem was not about losing the books, but rather of getting them to display on the reader after the upgrade.

This implies, to me, that books are downloaded directly to the Opus? - Surely it's like the Gen 3 where the procedure is e-retailer > PC > Gen 3.... hence there will be a copy on the PC - or are you saying the Opus is like the Kindle ? |

Well...ther are to types of computer users. Those who lost important data and those who will loose it in the immediate future.
As we say here on our IT department when somebody runs in crying that he lost important data on a removable device: That is no problem because when it is important to you, you will have one ore more backup copies |

They are not allowed to to use none certified thumdrives, they still do. They simply refuse to use anything that we offer. They keep thinking that we do that to make their lives miserable. And then they start crying when something goes wrong. The fastest way to educate them is to let it happen. People that use the available systems almost never have problems. You will have to go outside the normal procedure to get into trouble. |

My apologies, I retract my previous comment. You clearly have done your best to manage the situation. I guess some users will just do whatever is easiest at the end of the day, even if it's not the smartest thing to be doing.

I've upgraded to the new 2.0 FW and I have to say I'm very pleased. Registering the device with ADE worked seamlessly and I was able to transfer all my "digital editions" to the Cybook. I was particularly pleased that my older Adobe DRMed books can also now be read on my Cybook; these are books I bought ~8 years ago with Adobe Reader v6 IIRC.
I've read three complete books and have not had a single crash, whereas with the previous version the Cybook would freeze up quite frequently. The three books I read were DRMed ePub, converted PDB and converted PRC respectively. I don't really miss the dictionary as my iPhone now has good quality dictionaries (Chambers and SOED). The one thing I really miss is bookmarks. Page turning is indeed faster, not so sure about boot time. Being able to quickly skip forward is very useful for me because I often switch to reading the same book on the iPhone then switch back - wish the Cybook had "whispersync"... |
